Position: Home Carer / Companion

Location: Wellington, Western Cape

Working Hours: 6 hours per day

Weekend Duty: One weekend on duty, one weekend off (alternating)

Overtime: Must be willing and available to work overtime at short notice when required.

Afrikaans Speaking preferred

About the Position

We are looking for a compassionate, reliable and physically fit Home Carer to provide personal care and household support to an 88-year-old diabetic lady living at home. The successful candidate will also assist with meal preparation and light household duties for two additional pensioners living in the home.

This is a long-term position requiring someone who genuinely enjoys caring for elderly people and treats them with dignity, patience and respect.

Key Responsibilities

Personal Care

• Assist with daily personal hygiene, bathing and dressing.
• Assist with grooming and general wellbeing.
• Monitor general health and report any concerns promptly.
• Ensure diabetic care routines are followed.

Medication

• Ensure medication is taken correctly and on time.
• Record medication administered where required.
• Observe and report any side effects or health concerns.

Mobility & Wellbeing

• Accompany the client on daily walks.
• Assist with prescribed mobility and flexibility exercises.
• Encourage safe movement and independence wherever possible.

Companionship

• Read aloud to a partially sighted lady.
• Provide friendly conversation and emotional support.
• Encourage mental stimulation and social interaction.

Meal Preparation

• Prepare breakfast daily.
• Prepare a nutritious lunch (the main meal of the day) for three pensioners.
• Maintain good food hygiene and cleanliness.
• Follow any dietary requirements, particularly diabetic meal planning.

Housekeeping

• Washing and ironing.
• General tidying of living areas used during the day.
• Maintain a clean, safe and organised environment.
• Clean and sanitise room and bathroom

Essential Requirements

Applicants must:

• Have previous experience caring for elderly people.
• Be easygoing and not stressed
• Be kind, patient, honest and trustworthy.
• Be physically capable of assisting with mobility and household duties.
• Be willing to work overtime at short notice.
• Be available to work alternating weekends.
• Be a non-smoker.
• Be a non-drinker.
• Live within approximately 20 minutes of Wellington.
• Have reliable transport to and from work.
• Be able to comfortably walk approximately 1.9 km to and from the nearest taxi collection point if required (mostly flat terrain).
• Be able to communicate clearly in English. Knowledge of Afrikaans would be advantageous.
• Be legally entitled to work in South Africa.

• Home-Based Care or Caregiver qualification.
• First Aid Certificate.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

• Assist an elderly person safely with daily activities.
• Stand and walk for extended periods.
• Perform light household duties, including laundry and meal preparation.
• Be strong and healthy

Probation

Appointment will be subject to:

• Reference checks.
• A probation period.
• Verification of previous employment.
• Criminal background screening if required.

Pay: R38,00 - R45,00 per hour
