Operation: Tongaat Hulett Sugar – Felixton
Job Title: HSE Specialist
Level: CU
Reports To: HSE Manager
Context/Scope: Tongaat Hulett has a proud 127-year history and a strong socio-economic legacy in KwaZulu-Natal province, in South Africa, and into sub-Saharan Africa. Technical operations include the following: -
- Three Sugar Manufacturing mills situated on along the North coast of Kwa Zulu Natal stretching from Tongaat through to Empangeni.
- A Sugar Refining Operations based in South Coast Road Durban
- An animal feeds manufacturing plant situated in Tongaat alongside the Maidstone Sugar Mill.
- A technical operations support comprising technical specialist who provide high level support to the operations both in South Africa and foreign operations.

Qualifications And Experience Required
- Grade 12
- SAMTRAC
- Safety Diploma / Degree or Studying towards the relevant Degree
- 5 years in the HSE field, with at least 2 years as HSE Compliance Officer or Administrator
- Have an in-depth understanding of SHE management systems - ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 systems
- Have a good understanding of all applicable HSE legislation. Strong understanding of applicable environmental legislation for sugar milling. Good interpersonal skills, be able to communicate at all levels within the organisation.
- Drivers Licence Code 8 (code B)
- Mature, excellent communication, strong administrative knowledge with good understanding of IsiZulu
Job Profile
- To maintain HSE compliance to Felixton HSE management systems by providing assistance to the HSE Manager and support line management. To provide a support function to employees on all matters related to HSE.
- Maintain the integrated HSE management system: Ensure that all system requirements are met, procedures, checklists, legal requirements, appointments, close out of findings, regular meetings are held and HSE Awareness.
- Incident Investigation & Audits: Conducts HSE incident investigations, conducts internal auditing of SHE system documentation and compliance. Monthly hygiene audit with Clinic sister. Conduct audits on permit and lock out procedure compliance and produce report for corrective measures purpose. Stop day Audits as per schedule and report on deviations and compliance.
- Contractor Management: Ensure all contractors comply with TH Standards. Review contractor safety files for compliance to legal and site requirements. Ensure all contractor files are updated.
- Supervise subordinates: Monitoring attendance / conduct and output and addressing deviations from agreed performance indicators through meetings / counselling and / or other approved methods designed to improve and motivate personnel. Addressing workplace conflict / conduct through the initiation and co-ordination of consultative processes and implementation of specific disciplinary procedures.
- Provide support to line management: Represent the HSE department in exchanging views and providing options on best practice based on HSE management, in relation to maintaining the viability of the operations.
- Manage IOD’s with onsite OHN, clear understanding of Clinic functions and operations.
- Manage all Licences and Permits conditions to ensure compliance. Engage with relevant external Stakeholders through meetings / Forums.
