Job description
Human Resources Manager
Cape Town, South Africa
We are recruiting an experienced Human Resources Manager for an internationally recognised premium retail brand based in Cape Town.
This is a broad Human Resources position supporting both the retail operation and corporate teams, and we're looking for someone who is comfortable taking genuine ownership of the function.
The role needs an HR professional who can work closely with senior leadership on the wider people agenda while remaining close enough to the business to deal with the day-to-day realities of HR.
You could be discussing organisational structure and future headcount with senior management in the morning and dealing with an employee relations, payroll or recruitment issue later that afternoon.
For that reason, this isn't a position for someone who wants to specialise in one particular area of Human Resources.
The Role
You will act as a key Human Resources partner to the business, supporting managers and employees across the organisation and ensuring the function operates effectively across both corporate and retail populations.
Your responsibilities will cover the full employee lifecycle, including recruitment, employee relations, performance, development, reward, payroll, compliance and HR operations.
Business Partnering & People Strategy
You will work closely with senior leadership on workforce planning, headcount, organisational structure, succession and broader people priorities.
You'll be expected to provide practical advice and use your experience and judgement to help managers make sound people decisions.
HR reporting and analytics will also form part of the position, providing insight into headcount, turnover, recruitment, performance and other key people measures.
Recruitment & Talent
You will oversee recruitment across the business, from understanding requirements with hiring managers through to candidate selection, offers and onboarding.
You'll help develop talent pipelines for key positions and manage relationships with external recruitment partners where required.
Beyond recruitment, you will work with management to identify strong internal talent and support succession, development and retention planning.
Employee Relations
A strong understanding of South African employment legislation and employee relations is important for this position.
You will advise managers and employees across performance matters, disciplinary processes, grievances, investigations and other workplace issues.
We need someone confident handling sensitive situations who understands the correct processes while also being able to reach practical and commercially sensible outcomes.
Performance & Development
You will manage and support the company's performance management processes, including:
- Annual performance reviews
- Salary and compensation reviews
- Incentive and bonus cycles
- Individual development planning
- Succession planning
- Talent identification
- Performance improvement
- Employee retention
You will also identify broader learning and development requirements and coordinate relevant training initiatives across the organisation.
Payroll & Human Resources Operations
This position includes hands-on responsibility for payroll, so previous payroll experience is important.
You will oversee the monthly payroll process and ensure information relating to salaries, commissions, incentives, bonuses, benefits and employee changes is processed accurately and on time.
You'll work closely with Finance on reconciliations, payroll reporting, budgeting and forecasting.
You will also ensure employee records, contracts and HR documentation are accurate and properly maintained.
Reward & Benefits
The Human Resources Manager will support the business across compensation and benefits, including salary reviews, benchmarking and recommendations around remuneration.
You will also oversee the administration of employee benefits, including medical aid and provident fund arrangements.
Compliance
You will be responsible for ensuring Human Resources practices remain compliant with relevant South African employment and payroll legislation and that statutory requirements and submissions are properly managed.
This will include responsibilities relating to:
- Employment Equity
- BBBEE
- UIF
- EMP201
- IRP5
- Workmen's Compensation
- WSP
- ATR submissions
We therefore need someone who already has a strong working knowledge of the South African Human Resources environment.
HR Systems & Projects
You will maintain the quality and accuracy of HR information and support improvements to systems, reporting and processes.
Experience with Workday and Sage/VIP People 300 would be useful, although broader experience with established HRIS and payroll platforms will also be considered.
The position will also participate in local, regional and international Human Resources projects and transformation initiatives.
There will additionally be some involvement in workplace and facilities matters, including vendors, office requirements and relevant health and safety responsibilities.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for an established Human Resources professional with a broad generalist background who enjoys being close to the business.
You should bring:
- Approximately 7+ years of progressive Human Resources experience
- Strong generalist experience across the employee lifecycle
- Previous hands-on payroll experience
- Experience working within a retail environment
- Strong knowledge of South African employment legislation and statutory HR requirements
- Good employee relations experience, including disciplinary and performance matters
- Experience partnering with senior managers and business leaders
- Recruitment and talent management experience
- Exposure to compensation, benefits and performance processes
- Strong organisational and analytical skills
- Good Excel capability and confidence working with HR data
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A professional and discreet approach when handling confidential matters
- The ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-moving business
- A relevant Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Industrial Psychology, Business Administration or a related discipline
