Job description

1. Position Purpose

The HR Manager is responsible for the overall management and implementation of the company's human-resources strategy, policies, procedures and employee-relations functions. The role is particularly important within a private security environment, where the company may employ a large operational workforce working shifts across multiple client sites.

The successful candidate will provide professional HR support to management and employees while contributing to workforce stability, employee engagement, operational efficiency and legal compliance.

2. Key Responsibilities

HR Strategy and Management

  • Develop and implement HR policies, procedures and practices aligned with the company's business objectives.
  • Provide strategic HR advice to senior management and operational managers.
  • Develop workforce plans based on operational requirements and client contracts.
  • Monitor staffing levels, turnover, absenteeism and vacancies.
  • Identify HR risks and recommend appropriate corrective action.
  • Maintain professional and confidential HR practices.
  • Promote a positive, disciplined and performance-driven workplace culture.

Disciplinary Management

  • Manage disciplinary processes in accordance with company policy and applicable South African labour legislation.
  • Assist managers with investigations and preparation for disciplinary proceedings.
  • Ensure employees are treated consistently and fairly.
  • Maintain accurate disciplinary records.
  • Coordinate disciplinary hearings where required.
  • Provide guidance on appropriate corrective and disciplinary measures.
  • Monitor repeat offences and identify trends.
  • Ensure disciplinary procedures are procedurally and substantively fair.

Labour Relations and Legislative Compliance

The HR Manager will be responsible for ensuring that HR practices comply with applicable South African employment legislation, including, where applicable:

  • Basic Conditions of Employment Act
  • Labour Relations Act
  • Employment Equity Act
  • Skills Development Act
  • Unemployment Insurance legislation
  • Occupational Health and Safety legislation
  • Protection of Personal Information Act
  • Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases legislation
  • Applicable bargaining-council or sectoral requirements
  • Applicable private-security industry requirements

Performance Management

  • Implement and maintain the company's performance-management system.
  • Assist managers with setting measurable performance objectives.
  • Coordinate probation reviews and performance evaluations.
  • Address underperformance through appropriate performance-improvement processes.
  • Identify high-performing employees and development opportunities.
  • Ensure performance-management documentation is maintained.

Employee Wellness and Occupational Health

  • Promote employee wellness initiatives.
  • Support management in addressing workplace health and wellness matters.
  • Coordinate occupational-health processes where required.
  • Assist with workplace injury and occupational-incident administration.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding employee information.
  • Refer employees to appropriate support services where applicable.

People Management

Where applicable, the HR Manager will supervise HR officers, administrators, recruiters, payroll staff or other HR personnel.

3. Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • Degree or diploma in Human Resources Management, Industrial Psychology, Labour Relations or a related field.
  • 5–7 years' relevant HR experience, preferably with at least 2–3 years in a management or supervisory position.
  • Proven experience managing employee relations and disciplinary processes.
  • Sound knowledge of South African labour legislation.
  • Experience with recruitment and selection.
  • Experience with HR administration and payroll processes.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Advantageous

  • Experience in the private security industry.
