Hydroponics Fertigation & Crop Protection Supervisor

About the Position

Cultura Fresh is looking for a hands-on and dependable Hydroponics Fertigation & Crop Protection Supervisor to join our Cultivation team in Klapmuts.

The successful candidate will lead the teams responsible for fertigation, water management and crop-protection activities within our hydroponic lettuce operation. This role requires a proactive leader who can coordinate daily operations, maintain accurate records, ensure compliance with GLOBALG.A.P. requirements and respond quickly to technical issues that may affect production.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, supervise and motivate the fertigation and crop-protection teams.
• Plan and allocate daily tasks according to operational requirements and application schedules.
• Ensure fertilisers and crop-protection products are prepared and applied accurately and safely.
• Monitor and manage water levels in dams, tanks and reservoirs.
• Measure, record and manage EC and pH levels.
• Identify and report irregularities in water quality, nutrient levels and system performance.
• Supervise pesticide mixing, application and spray-equipment calibration.
• Inspect fertigation, irrigation and spraying systems for faults or damage.
• Respond to equipment failures, leaking pipes, faulty pumps and water-supply interruptions.
• Perform minor repairs where appropriate and escalate major technical issues.
• Conduct weekly stock counts of fertilisers, pesticides and treatment products.
• Maintain accurate inventory records and ensure sufficient stock is always available.
• Complete and maintain all required GLOBALG.A.P. documentation and operational records.
• Ensure employees follow all health, safety and PPE requirements.

Requirements

• Previous experience in hydroponic farming, fertigation, irrigation, crop protection or a similar agricultural environment.
• Previous supervisory or team leadership experience.
• Practical knowledge of fertiliser preparation and application.
• Experience measuring and managing EC and pH levels.
• Knowledge of pesticide mixing, application and spray-equipment calibration.
• Ability to identify and resolve basic irrigation, pump, pipe and water-supply problems.
• Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
• Good record-keeping, stock-control and numerical skills.
• Ability to follow application schedules, product labels and standard operating procedures.
• Computer literacy (Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook).
• Willingness to work flexible hours according to operational requirements.

Advantageous

• Qualification in Agriculture, Horticulture, Irrigation or a related field.
• Previous GLOBALG.A.P. compliance or record-keeping experience.
• Formal pesticide applicator or chemical-handling training.
• First-aid, occupational health and safety or supervisory training.
• Experience working with hydroponically grown lettuce or other leafy greens.
