Intern: Video Journalist

Job description

The individual in the role is required to support the newsroom by assisting with news research, content gathering, reporting, video production and digital publishing while developing practical journalism skills under the guidance of experienced Editors and Reporters. The role provides hands-on exposure to the newsroom operations and professional broadcast journalism standards.

Story Generation & News Planning

Monitoring news trends, social media and community developments.

Assisting in identifying potential story opportunities.

Researching and pitching potential story ideas during editorial meetings.

News Gathering & Reporting

Assisting with gathering information for assigned stories.

Conducting basic interviews under supervision where required.

Verifying facts using credible sources.

Collecting supporting visuals, photographs and background information.

Video Production

Assisting with camera operation and recording.

Capturing footage and audio under supervision.

Learning to use broadcast and mobile journalism equipment.

Organising and preparing footage for editing.

Script Writing & Video Editing

Drafting news scripts for review.

Assisting with editing interviews and news packages.

Incorporating editorial feedback into final content.

Ensuring content complies with editorial guidelines.

Following newsroom editorial policies.

Verifying facts before publication.

Maintaining confidentiality and ethical journalism standards.

Applying feedback from editors to improve accuracy.

Live Reporting & Broadcasting

Assisting production teams during live broadcasts.

Preparing information and background material for presenters and reporters.

Observing and participating in live reporting opportunities under supervision.

Digital & Social Media Content

Assisting in creating digital-first news content.

Producing short video clips for online platforms.

Uploading approved content to digital publishing platforms.

Applying mobile journalism techniques where appropriate.

Team Collaboration & Communication

Working collaboratively with reporters, producers and technical teams.

Attending editorial meetings.

Communicating progress on assigned tasks.

Supporting newsroom operations during major news events.

Health, Safety & Equipment Management

Following workplace health and safety procedures.

Handling company equipment responsible.

Reporting equipment faults or incidents promptly.

Following field safety instructions.

Continuous Professional Development

Developing multimedia journalism skills.

Attending training sessions.

Qualifications

National Senior Certificate - Essential

National Diploma in Journalism/Media Studies - Essential

Bachelors Degree in Journalism/Media Studies - Recommended

Language

English - Advanced

Technology Proficiency

Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) - Basic
