Key purpose of the role

The Financial Learning & Development intern will support the research, design, development, review and evaluation of accessible, evidence-based financial education content for different audiences. The role will work closely with Learning and Development specialists and subject matter experts to translate financial concepts into practical learning experiences that help people make informed financial decisions and build healthier financial habits.

The internship will provide practical exposure to financial education, financial planning, learning content development, research, digital learning and programme evaluation within the Discovery Institute of Training.

Areas of responsibility

The intern will support the Learning & Development team by contributing to research, content development, quality assurance, evaluation and project coordination.

Areas of responsibility may include the following:

• Conduct desktop research on personal finance and financial education topics, including budgeting, saving, debt and credit, insurance, investing, retirement planning, financial risk and responsible financial decision-making.
• Use credible, current and appropriately dated sources, and record and reference sources accurately in the required referencing style.
• Fact-check financial information, examples, calculations, statistics and source details before submitting work for review.
• Help translate complex financial concepts into clear, practical and accessible learning content.
• Support the development and updating of presentations, workbooks, facilitator guides, activities, case studies, campaigns, digital learning content, assessments, infographics and other financial education resources.
• Assist with defining clear learning outcomes and structuring content into logical learning journeys.
• Research the financial education needs, behaviours, barriers and preferred learning methods of defined target audiences.
• Help translate research findings into learner profiles, learning outcomes, content recommendations, practical examples and realistic scenarios.
• Consider differences in financial knowledge, language, accessibility and digital access when supporting content development.
• Contribute ideas that make financial education relevant, inclusive, engaging and practical.
• Review content for financial accuracy, clarity, consistency, plain language, accessibility and alignment with the intended audience.
• Support quality assurance, proofreading, source verification, document control and version control.
• Help implement review feedback accurately and maintain clear records of changes.
• Support the development of financial education content that is objective, impartial, evidence-based, appropriately targeted and clearly separated from financial product marketing or personal financial advice.
• Identify and escalate information that may be inaccurate, outdated, misleading, promotional or advice-related.
• Work within applicable Discovery requirements, financial education standards and approval processes.
• Support the collection, organisation and analysis of participation, feedback and evaluation data.
• Assist with identifying trends, lessons and opportunities to improve the relevance, accessibility and effectiveness of financial education initiatives.
• Help prepare clear summaries, reports and presentations on activities, feedback and outcomes.
• Maintain organised records and databases of financial education content, research, sources and resources.
• Work collaboratively with Learning and Development specialists, instructional designers, financial education specialists, subject matter experts and relevant business stakeholders.
• Participate in project meetings and maintain assigned actions, supporting information and project records.
• Support financial education workshops, campaigns, events and activations when required.
• Manage allocated work within agreed timelines and raise risks, uncertainty or potential delays early.
• Stay informed about relevant developments in personal finance, financial planning, consumer behaviour, financial education and learning design.

Education and experience

• A completed three-year diploma or undergraduate degree in financial planning, finance, financial management, economics, investment management, commerce with a relevant major, or another closely related financial services field.
• Preference may be given to candidates whose studies included personal financial planning, consumer finance, financial literacy, behavioural economics, research methodology, statistics or data analysis.
• No formal work experience is required.
• Academic, volunteer or community experience involving research, financial education, content development, tutoring, data analysis or public engagement will be advantageous.

Technical capabilities

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.
• Ability to conduct structured online research and assess the credibility of sources.
• Ability to organise information and work accurately with documents and basic data.
• Basic data analysis or statistical literacy is advantageous.
• Exposure to digital content tools, learning platforms, design tools or generative AI is advantageous.
