IT Systems Technician: First Line Support (Post Level 11)

The Faculty of Military Science at Stellenbosch University (SU) operates in a distinctive academic environment at the interface of higher education and military education: military sciences.
Co-located within the Military Academy at Saldanha Campus, the Faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, conducts research and advances social impact within a joint
governance framework between Stellenbosch University and the Department of Defence (DoD), as provided for in the applicable Memorandum of Agreement.
The faculty plays a strategic role in military leadership development and academic pursuits within the Defence and Security sector and knowledge production in support of national priorities,
while upholding the academic standards, governance principles and institutional values of the University within a security-regulated environment.
Military Science Information Technology (MSIT) provides end-to-end ICT services in support of teaching, learning and research at the Faculty of Military Science. The Department manages
and supports IT infrastructure, networks, servers, end-user computing and classroom technology, while ensuring alignment with Stellenbosch University's ICT policies, security standards,
and operational requirements of a military environment.
Duties/Pligte
- Providing front-desk and first-line technical support to Faculty of Military Science users, namely students, Faculty (academic staff), and business support (academic support staff), as
well as to external workers, including Military Academy support staff and Research Fellows.
- Handling walk-in, telephonic, and email-based IT queries promptly and professionally.
- Logging, assigning, prioritising, and escalating incidents and service requests via Jira Service Desk, in line with defined SLAs and operational procedures.
- Taking ownership of support tickets and ensuring accurate updates, effective communication, and timely resolution of incidents and requests.
- Providing first-line hardware support for all Stellenbosch University-owned devices, including desktops, laptops, printers, projectors, and classroom technology.
- Providing first-line software support for all Stellenbosch University-approved operating systems and applications.
- Providing first-line network support for the Stellenbosch University-owned network infrastructure.
- Imaging, configuring, and deploying new end-user devices, including data backup, restoration, and migration between devices.
- Supporting IT services related to teaching venues, assessments, and examination environments.
- Administering staff and student cards, access control systems, and related IT access permissions where applicable.
- Assisting with the maintenance of accurate IT asset inventories and supporting lifecycle management, replacements, and audits.
- Supporting network, server, and infrastructure-related tasks under the guidance of senior technical staff.
- Undertaking additional IT-related duties and once-off projects as required to support MSIT operational objectives.
Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
- Matric and a relevant qualification (NQF level 6 or certification in Information Technology or related field) with at least three years' relevant IT support experience.
- Industry-recognised certifications such as Microsoft Fundamentals, CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Tech+, or equivalent will be advantageous.
- A demonstrated commitment to further professional development, including pursuing intermediate Microsoft certifications, CompTIA Tech+, or an equivalent two-year IT qualification.
Recommendation/Aanbeveling
- Certificate or diploma in Information Technology/Information Systems, or certification in CompTIA A+ or ComTIA N+, or a related field.
- Intermediate Microsoft certification, or an equivalent recognised two-year IT qualification.
- Working knowledge of the Service Desk platforms.
- Working knowledge of LAN and network cabling standards.
- Experience with video conferencing and collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams, particularly in support of teaching, meetings, and hybrid learning.
- An understanding of cloud-based services, including Microsoft cloud platforms and general cloud concepts.
- ITIL Foundation (v3 or later) certification or demonstrated knowledge of IT service management best practices would be advantageous.
- Competency in supporting and troubleshooting Windows-based systems.
- Language proficiency in English or Afrikaans.
- Customer-centric with excellent communication skills.
