Job description

LUNGELIHLE TRADING ENTERPRISE (LTE)

JUNIOR QUANTITY SURVEYOR / ESTIMATOR

Johannesburg / Gauteng | Part-Time / Flexible | Initial 4-Month Contract

Remuneration: R17,000 per month | Potential 25% salary progression upon qualifying project award

About LTE

Lungelihle Trading Enterprise (LTE) is an established South African construction company with extensive

experience in civil engineering and infrastructure projects, including roads, water infrastructure, pipelines,

structures and related civil works.

The company is strengthening its tendering and commercial management capability in preparation for an

anticipated increase in infrastructure opportunities during 2027. We are looking for a Junior Quantity Surveyor /

Estimator who is commercially minded, technically capable and motivated to become an important part of the

company's growth.

The Opportunity

This is not simply an administrative QS position. The successful candidate will work directly with the Managing

Director and will play a key role in rebuilding LTE's tender pipeline and commercial systems.

The initial appointment will be on a part-time/flexible basis for four months, with the intention of developing the

position into a more permanent role as the company's project pipeline grows.

The successful candidate will directly contribute to pricing and submission of tenders and, importantly,

participate in the commercial management of projects secured through their work.

Key Responsibilities

1. Tender Pricing & Estimating

  • Identify and review suitable construction tender opportunities.
  • Analyse tender documentation, drawings and Bills of Quantities.
  • Prepare competitive and commercially viable tender pricing.
  • Utilise Trimble and relevant estimating/pricing software.
  • Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
  • Develop and maintain construction rates and a master rate database.
  • Prepare tender pricing summaries.
  • Assist with preliminaries, mark-ups, risk allowances and margins.
  • Review tender pricing with the Managing Director before submission.
  • Maintain a comprehensive tender register and submission programme.
  • Track tender outcomes and maintain lessons learned.

2. Commercial Management

  • Prepare and assist with monthly payment certificates.
  • Measure and value completed works.
  • Monitor contract quantities against actual site requirements.
  • Identify variations and changes in scope.
  • Identify potential contractual claims.
  • Monitor site instructions and additional works.
  • Maintain variation and claims registers.
  • Monitor certified, invoiced and paid amounts.
  • Assist with final accounts.
  • Compare tendered costs against actual project costs.
  • Assist with project profitability and cost-to-complete assessments.

3. Tender & Market Development

  • Monitor SANRAL opportunities.
  • Monitor Rand Water and other Water Board opportunities.
  • Monitor municipal infrastructure tenders.
  • Monitor SOE procurement opportunities.
  • Monitor private-sector construction opportunities.
  • Identify major contractors requiring subcontractors.
  • Monitor awarded infrastructure contracts and identify potential subcontracting opportunities.
  • Assist in identifying potential JV and subcontracting opportunities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant Quantity Surveying qualification.
  • Approximately 5 years' relevant practical experience in construction quantity surveying, estimating or

commercial management.

  • Experience in civil engineering / infrastructure construction will be highly advantageous.
  • Experience with Trimble or equivalent estimating software.
  • Good understanding of Bills of Quantities and construction measurement.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Experience in tender pricing.
  • Understanding of construction contracts, variations and claims.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Ability to identify commercial risks and potential claims.
  • A valid driver's licence would be advantageous.

Advantageous Experience

  • Roads and road rehabilitation.
  • Water infrastructure and pipelines.
  • Sewer infrastructure and stormwater.
  • Concrete structures.
  • SANRAL projects.
  • Rand Water projects.
  • Municipal infrastructure.
  • Civil engineering subcontracting.

What We Are Looking For

  • Commercially minded and analytical.
  • Accurate and detail-oriented.
  • Proactive and able to work independently.
  • Able to meet tender deadlines.
  • Comfortable working directly with the Managing Director.
  • Passionate about construction and infrastructure.
  • Interested in growing with a smaller construction business.
  • Willing to take ownership of work and outcomes.
  • Able to identify opportunities rather than simply wait for instructions.

The successful candidate must understand that accuracy and commercial judgement are critical. A tender that

is incorrectly priced can result in significant losses to the company.

Performance & Growth Opportunity

LTE recognises that the current position is an initial investment in rebuilding its tendering and commercial

capacity. The successful candidate will therefore have a direct performance-based growth opportunity.

Where a tender that was substantially prepared, priced and submitted by the candidate during their

employment results in a formal contract award/appointment to LTE, the company intends to review the

candidate's remuneration and provide a 25% salary increase, subject to the terms and conditions applicable at

that time.

Current salary: R17,000/month → Qualifying project awarded → Potential revised salary: R21,250/month

Further progression will be considered as LTE's project portfolio and responsibilities increase.

Initial Four-Month Objective

The primary objective of the initial appointment will be to establish a strong foundation for LTE's 2027

construction order book.

  • Increase the number of quality tenders submitted.
  • Increase the total value of the tender pipeline.
  • Improve tender pricing accuracy.
  • Establish LTE's master construction rate database.
  • Develop supplier and subcontractor pricing relationships.
  • Improve tender turnaround times.
  • Establish proper tender documentation and controls.
  • Strengthen payment certificate preparation.
  • Identify variations and claims early.
  • Improve commercial visibility on projects.

Why Join LTE?

This opportunity is suited to a Quantity Surveyor who wants more responsibility and direct exposure to the

business owner and commercial decision-making, rather than being one of many employees within a large

corporate environment.

You will work directly with the Managing Director and play a meaningful role in building LTE's tender pipeline,

winning projects, managing the commercial side of those projects and growing with the company.

How to Apply

Please submit:

  • Updated CV.
  • Copies of relevant qualifications.
  • Proof of relevant professional registrations, if applicable.
  • Brief summary of relevant civil/infrastructure experience.
  • Details of experience with Trimble or other estimating systems.
  • Expected availability.

Applications should be submitted to: recruitments@lungelihle.co.za
