Company Description:
Nexomic Laboratories (NL) is a histopathology laboratory dedicated to delivering accurate, timely pathology services to clinicians and patients. Our team works with precision and care in a regulated, academic environment.
Role Overview:
We are looking for a motivated and reliable Laboratory Assistant (Generalist) to join our team on an entry-level basis. This role provides administrative and operational support to NL, ensuring smooth day-to-day workflows. The successful candidate will be involved in both office administration and a range of laboratory support functions.
Location: Durban
Qualifications and Registration:
- Matriculation exemption
- Active registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
- Valid driver's licence - Code B (Historic: Code 8). Advantageous:
Code C1
(Historic: Code 10)
Key Responsibilities - Administration and Operations:
- Manage and organise physical and digital records
- Capture and update data accurately in laboratory and administrative systems
- Attend to incoming calls, emails, and correspondence professionally
- Document control and preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Schedule meetings and maintain departmental calendars
- Receive and direct visitors, deliveries, and couriers
- Schedule and roster staff shifts and duties
- Perform stock control and audits of laboratory and office supplies
- Manage equipment maintenance schedules and maintain service records
Key Responsibilities - Laboratory:
- Collect and receive samples in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and log relevant data while maintaining chain of custody
- Assisting with general laboratory duties as directed by laboratory staff
- Routine upkeep and cleaning of laboratory and associated workstations
- Prepare relevant reagents and perform stock maintenance
- Follow all health & safety protocols and SOPs at all times
- Processing of laboratory samples
- Maintenance of laboratory equipment
- File, archive, and retrieve sample material and documents
Skills and Competencies:
- Reliable and punctual with a professional attitude
- Proficiency in written and spoken English communication
- Computer literacy - proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, email communication and ability to learn/implement new software applications
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
- Ability and willingness to work within a team and participate in group activities
- Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure
- Ability to follow instructions and adhere to procedures
