The Western Cape Blood Service is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to collect, process and distribute blood and blood products of the highest standards in the Western Cape.
A vacancy exists for a Laboratory Manager – Red Cell Serology & Haematology Department - Grade C5
Main Purpose
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the Red Cell Serology and Haematology laboratory, ensuring the delivery of accurate, reliable, and timely testing services that support a safe blood supply.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading all technical and administrative laboratory operations.
- Ensuring compliance with SANAS, ISO, and Quality Management System requirements.
- Managing the analysis, interpretation, authorisation, and release of routine and confirmatory serology and haematology results.
- Harness molecular testing capabilities to enhance laboratory functionality, strengthen diagnostic precision, and improve blood safety outcomes.
- Overseeing quality assurance, quality control programmes, equipment validation, maintenance, and calibration.
- Compile accurate statistics for cost analysis, haemovigilance, research projects.
- Keep abreast of new technologies and processes.
- Required to conduct or co-ordinate research projects.
- Managing laboratory staff, training, performance, and development.
- Driving continuous improvement initiatives and supporting research, innovation, and best laboratory practices.
- Managing laboratory budgets, inventory, supplier relationships, and operational reporting.
Providing after-hours support and participating in weekend duties when required.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric Certificate.
- B-Tech, National Diploma, or BHSc in Biomedical Technology (Blood Transfusion) or a related field.
- Registered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa
- Minimum of 6 years post-board examination experience in a laboratory environment.
- Proven experience in laboratory management, quality assurance, and staff supervision.
- Experience in blood transfusion services, Red Cell Serology, and Haematology testing.
- Experience managing laboratory audits, validations, quality control programmes, and regulatory compliance.
- Exposure to budgeting, stock control, and operational management will be advantageous.
- Willingness to work weekends and flexible hours as operational needs dictate.
- Availability for after-hours support when required.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership and people management capabilities.
- Sound knowledge of Immunohaematology, Red Cell Serology, and Haematology laboratory practices.
- Extensive knowledge of SANAS, ISO standards, and Quality Management Systems.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Computer literacy.
