Laboratory Manager

Department Description/Departement Beskrywing Faculty Medicine and Health Sciences Department of Biomedical Sciences Division of Clinical Anatomy Laboratory Manager (Post Level 9) (Tygerberg Campus) Ref. TGB02/387/0926 The Division of Clinical Anatomy (CA) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University (SU) houses a Teaching and Research focused laboratory. The Laboratory Manager is required to bring together the knowledge of lab procedures, health and safety practices, the overall aims of the Division of Clinical Anatomy and study-specific deliverables. The Laboratory Manager needs in-depth knowledge of a histology laboratory and the research environment to master their duties, and have the ability to lead and manage other laboratory personnel and students. The Laboratory Manager must facilitate a working environment in the laboratory that promotes effective and productive completion of tasks, while also enabling the necessary flexibility in laboratory activities to accommodate the changing needs of the group.

Duties/Pligte

• Managing the daily functioning of the histology laboratory and managing ongoing projects/ accounts.
• Assisting Principal Investigators (PIs) to plan, develop, troubleshoot and implement new protocols to support research studies and maximise third stream income.
• Taking measures to keep the laboratory running safely and efficiently by revising or developing and implementing new SOPs, QC/QA control, and validation programmes before implementing procedures.
• Complying with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), and ensuring that the laboratory meets all necessary regulatory guidelines.
• Managing training and competency assessments for all laboratory personnel and students.
• Developing and administering cost control, budgets, administrative procedures and equipment maintenance.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

• A master's degree in histology, medical sciences, anatomy, or a related field.
• At least four years relevant histology laboratory operations experience at laboratory manager and/or supervisory level.
• Excellent knowledge of methods, materials, techniques and equipment used in a Histology or an Immunohistochemistry (IHC) research laboratory.
• Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

• Project management experience.
• Background in IHC and qualitative image analysis methods with advanced skills in troubleshooting, optimisation, and validation.
• Detail-oriented, maintaining a high level of personal accountability and sound problem-solving skills.
• Experience of working in a tertiary environment.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (1993) and National Health Act (2003).
