Job description
The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) is a registered private higher education provider and a wholly owned subsidiary of Advtech Ltd, listed on the JSE.
The IIE’s Academic Center of Excellence (ACE) is the custodian of academic quality, educational technology, and governance across the institution. It leads academic strategy, compliance, and operational integrity through robust governance structures.
The current ACE is a hub for academic innovation, staff capacity building, quality assurance, and governance across both the schools and tertiary divisions.
We are excited to invite applications for the role of Learning Technologist (LT). Based at The IIE’s head office in Sandton, this role will support the ACE ED Tech & Innovation Team.
The purpose of the job:
A Learning Technologist (LT) specialises in integrating and managing educational technologies to enhance teaching and learning practices. Their primary focus is selecting, implementing, and maintaining digital tools and platforms, ensuring these technologies create engaging, accessible, and effective learning environments. LTs are responsible for the production and management of digital media content within online learning spaces, typically via a Learning Management System (LMS).
In contrast, an Instructional Designer (ID) concentrates on applying instructional design principles to create structured and meaningful learning experiences. IDs analyse learner needs, design course content, and develop interactive activities aimed at improving student understanding and engagement.
Both roles collaborate closely to deliver optimal learning experiences: while the Instructional Designer establishes the educational framework, learning objectives, and content strategies, the Learning Technologist ensures that the chosen technological solutions effectively support and enhance this framework, ultimately promoting better learner outcomes.
Reporting to: The successful candidate will report to the IDOL Team Lead.
Main Outputs and Responsibilities for this Position: Delivery of Modules
- Translate instructional design storyboards and design specifications into fully built courses in the LMS using built-in authoring tools, templates, and platform features.
- Create, configure, and test interactive learning activities, assessments, and multimedia components within the LMS environment.
- Ensure all development is of high standard, timeous, and within deadlines.
Quality Assurance
- Ensure all digital content meets accessibility, usability, and quality standards before course launch.
- Ensure all feedback from faculty/SMEs/IDs are attended to and checked.
- Modules developed by external partners should adhere to the provided template and accurately interpret the content supplied.
Continuous maintenance of modules
- Investigate problems reported by the brands and the central teams during a semester.
- Apply solutions in modules and offers on module pages.
- Clean up deployed content documents in workflows and update statuses on the required systems.
Projects and Support
- Collaborate closely with instructional designers and academics to ensure the final course build aligns with learning design and pedagogical intent.
- Implement new templates, assessments, resources, and more on the LMS as required.
- Support the central academic team and brands with technical aspects of implementing new initiatives.
- Assist the department manager, team leads, and the courseware production manager in completing specific projects as identified.
- Develop and maintain project timelines to ensure all deliverables are met on schedule. This includes regularly update and communicate timelines to stakeholders, adjusting as necessary based on project needs.
- Cross-Departmental Coordination with faculty and IDs to align project goals and resources, whereby facilitating regular meetings and updates between departments to ensure clear communication and address any challenges.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks based on urgency and impact.
- Use project management tools to track progress, allocate resources, and report on status to stakeholders.
- Stay abreast of emerging tools and make recommendations for adoption or improvement.
Administration and Governance
- Ensure that all LMS materials comply with policy, regulatory & legal requirements (incl. copyright) and that all issues are addressed where required.
Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum of a bachelor's degree is preferred in the related discipline—IT or multimedia.
- An honours-level degree is advantageous.
- Any professional development in eLearning content design is to be considered.
Experience
- A minimum of 2 years in Learning Management Systems (LMS), e-learning development tools, education technology integration, instructional design, user experience (UX) design, assessment tools, web development, and collaboration tools.
- A minimum of 1 year in Accessibility Standards, emerging technologies and Multimedia Production
Competencies:
- Understanding learning theories and designing effective instructional materials is fundamental. This includes proficiency in various instructional design models (ADDIE)
- Technical Proficiency with E-Learning Tools: Skills in using LMS platforms and e-learning authoring tools are crucial for content development and delivery for the online learning space.
- The ability to create and edit video, audio, and graphics enhances the quality and engagement of learning materials.
- Skills in managing projects, including timelines, resources, and stakeholder communication, ensure successful implementation of learning initiatives.
- The ability to work effectively with IDs, SMEs, and administrators is key to understanding needs and promoting the successful adoption of technologies.
- Understanding and implementing accessibility standards is vital for creating inclusive learning experiences for all users.
