FACULTY OF LAW CENTRE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS POST TITLE: LECTURER (One Post) In pursuit of the ideals of excellence and diversity, the University of Pretoria wishes to invite applications for the following vacancy.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbents will be responsible for:

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in human rights law at postgraduate level;
  • Developing a research programme in an appropriate area of expertise or expanding existing research programmes;
  • Publishing research articles in the foremost national/international accredited journals;
  • Participate in national and international conferences within the research focus areas;
  • Supervising postgraduate master’s students within the research focus areas;
  • Performing assigned departmental duties (e.g. of an administrative nature);
  • Community engagement in relation to the research focus areas;
  • Representing the Centre on Faculty and other committees as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:* At least a master’s degree with specialisation in Human Rights or other related fields;

  • At least one accredited or peer reviewed quality publications output or any publication of a scholarly nature, demonstrating the candidate’s potential to develop

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Ability to work in a team;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Good language and communication skills.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:* Registration for, or progress with, doctoral studies will be a strong recommendation;

  • Relevant tertiary or vocational teaching experience or post-qualification experience in the legal profession or related field, will be a strong recommendation;
  • Experience in or exposure to postgraduate supervision will be to candidate’s advantage;
  • Knowledge of disability law, women’s rights, climate change and other related fields
  • Fund raising experience
  • Relevant academic administration experience will be a recommendation.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
