About the Role

West-Med is looking for a professional, patient-focused Locum General Practitioner (GP) to provide general medical and urgent care services across our practices.

The successful candidate will work alongside our clinical and administrative teams to provide high-quality, ethical and evidence-based medical care to patients. This position is suited to a GP looking for flexible locum opportunities within a modern, multidisciplinary private healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

The Locum General Practitioner will be responsible for:

• Conducting general medical consultations, examinations and assessments.
• Diagnosing and managing acute and chronic medical conditions within the practitioner's scope of practice.
• Providing appropriate treatment, prescriptions and follow-up care.
• Attending to walk-in and urgent care patients where required.
• Providing preventative healthcare, routine health screenings and general wellness advice.
• Referring patients to specialists, allied healthcare professionals or emergency services when clinically appropriate.
• Requesting and interpreting relevant pathology and diagnostic investigations.
• Maintaining accurate, complete and confidential patient records.
• Completing clinical notes, scripts, referral letters and other required documentation timeously.
• Communicating clearly and professionally with patients regarding their diagnosis, treatment options and follow-up requirements.
• Working collaboratively with other doctors, nurses, reception staff and healthcare professionals.
• Following West-Med's clinical, administrative and operational procedures.
• Maintaining appropriate standards of patient confidentiality and informed consent.
• Ensuring all clinical activities remain within the practitioner's registered scope of practice.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must:

• Hold an MBChB or equivalent recognised medical qualification.
• Be currently registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an independent medical practitioner.
• Hold appropriate professional indemnity cover.
• Be legally eligible to practise medicine in South Africa.
• Have experience in general practice, primary healthcare and/or urgent care.
• Be comfortable managing a broad range of general medical presentations.
• Have strong clinical judgement and appropriate referral practices.
• Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Be comfortable working within an electronic practice-management and patient-record environment.

Preferred Experience

The following would be advantageous:

• Previous private practice experience.
• Experience in urgent or after-hours primary care.
• Experience managing chronic conditions.
• Experience in men's and women's health.
• Experience with minor procedures.
• Additional postgraduate diplomas, certifications or areas of special interest relevant to primary healthcare.

Working Hours

Locum shifts may include weekdays, weekends and/or after-hours periods, depending on operational requirements and practitioner availability.

Shift dates and times will be agreed upon in advance.

Compliance

The successful candidate will be required to maintain valid HPCSA registration and any other professional registrations, certifications and indemnity arrangements required to practise during the period of engagement.

All patient care must be provided in accordance with applicable South African healthcare legislation, HPCSA ethical requirements and West-Med clinical policies and procedures.
