Logistics & Safety Operator

Objective:

To execute effective logistics operations and workplace safety practices on the warehouse/manufacturing floor and premises. This role ensures the safe and compliant loading/unloading of materials and addresses untrained or infrequent drivers through the deployment of the fall arrest system. The incumbent will play a supportive on-site role in physical safety matters, directly participating in safety incidents and risk assessments, assisting with toolbox talks, and participating in incident investigations. The role involves performing tasks such as working at heights, cable cutting, sprinkler assembly, Ficep angle packaging, pick slip creation, and shipping. Ensuring compliance, accuracy, and continuous improvement is maintained in order entry, contractor onboarding, and day-to-day safety performance.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Working at Heights:

• Conduct physical operations and compliance for all work-at-height safety operations involving the retractable fall arrest system.
• Participate in and guide safety incident investigations.
• Enforce the correct use of PPE and material handling protocols, ensuring no safety violations during operations.
• Assist in conducting toolbox talks and refresher training related to floor safety and lifting, sharing the best practices.
• Take accountability for the condition, usability, and inspections of fall protection systems.

Security Load & On-Site Traffic Safety:

• Conduct truck load securement for approximately 8 trucks per day however not limited too.
• Conduct pre-use safety briefings with drivers and assistants, especially for third-party and untrained drivers.
• Manage installation/removal of the retractable fall arrest system at shift start and end.
• Control safe movement around suspended loads, establish safe walking routes, and mitigate loading hazards.

Sprinkler Assembly, Cable Cutting & Material Handling:

• Assemble sprinkler kits, cutting cables, validating completeness and build quality.
• Transact all sprinkler-related activity in QAD and ensure stock integrity.
• Accountable for kits, and tire backflushing to reflect true material usage.
• Operate forklifts, stackers, or hoists when needed, following safe handling techniques.
• Ensure timely and accurate backflushing of: Kits, Cables and tires

Quality Control, Compliance & Inspections

• Ensure the proper use of PPE such as safety harnesses, helmets, gloves, and safety glasses during all operations.
• Support in maintaining records for risk assessments, safety training, and incident logs.
• Support emergency preparedness plans, including evacuation procedures.
• Perform regular equipment checks and routine maintenance to ensure operational readiness and safety compliance.
• Physically observe contractor activity on-site to ensure adherence to site rules and safety standards.
• Participate in contractor induction processes, providing site-specific hazard orientation.
• Support monitoring contractor compliance during high-risk activities, raising concerns and stopping work when needed

Warehouse Administration:

• Release dispatch documentation by printing picking slips and notify the supply chain planner/manager for any shortages.
• Timely shipping system transactions.
• Notify Finance upon completion for invoicing and file closure.

Continuous Improvement, Learning & Training:

• Training & Development: Attend a minimum of three training and development sessions annually to enhance skills and knowledge in logistics techniques, safety protocols, and industry best practices.
• Learning Culture: Engage in ongoing training opportunities and promote a culture of continuous learning, encouraging open discussions about skills enhancement and sharing knowledge among peers.
• Facilitate informal knowledge sharing and on-the-floor coaching.
• Feedback and Ideas: Actively contribute actionable ideas for continuous improvement focused on enhancing logistics and safety processes, reducing waste, eliminating safety risks and improving product quality.

General/Productivity:

• Work Effectiveness: Aim to achieve a daily/hourly average of 85% work effectiveness. Minimize idle time through proactive task execution and regular communication of task priorities.
• Task Reassignment: Upon completion of primary duties, promptly communicate availability to relevant personnel to ensure reassignment to critical production areas, leveraging skills and experience effectively.
• Flexibility: Maintain a flexible work schedule, demonstrating readiness to work overtime as necessary to meet production deadlines or address unexpected demands. Strive to minimize objections to schedule adjustments.
• Obstacle Identification: Quickly identify and communicate any obstacles that could hinder productivity, ensuring that the team can address issues without requiring unnecessary overtime or miscommunication.
• Material Handling: Use appropriate material handling techniques when moving and positioning items and equipment. Select the correct equipment, such as trolleys, stackers, forklifts and hoists, to achieve optimum utilization and minimize risks during operations.

Reports to the Warehouse Supervisor / Team Leader regarding all operational requirements.

Reports to the Operational Excellence Coordinator on all safety responsibilities.

Minimum qualification:

Education level:

A minimum of Grade 12/Matric is required. Additional certifications in safety, fall protection, forklift operation, or logistics management are advantageous.

Experience :

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in material handling, logistics, or load securing operations, preferably within a manufacturing or logistics environment.
• Experience with ERP systems for stock management and proven proficiency in forklift operation are essential.

Specific knowledge, skill, ability, and requirements:

• Safety Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with safety protocols and equipment inspections, particularly related to fall protection systems and overhead safety rails, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
• Effective Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to clearly report inspection findings and collaborate with team members across various departments.
• Strong understanding of warehouse safety systems and material flow.
• Hands-on capability to operate from the floor in safety-sensitive environments.
• Clear and confident communicator; able to enforce safety standards and coach others.
• Physically fit to handle lifting, walking, and working at heights.
