Job description

We are looking for a dedicated, responsible and hands-on Maintenance Assistant to support our operations. The successful candidate will work closely with machine operators and the maintenance team to ensure that all machines, attachments and equipment are properly maintained kept in pristine operational condition.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Preventative Maintenance

  • Assist Operators with routine preventative maintenance.
  • Ensure radiators are blown out and cleaned during every scheduled break to prevent overheating.
  • Assist with daily machine checks and identify potential maintenance issues.
  • Assist with greasing and general upkeep of machines.
  • Conduct basic inspections and report any defects, damage or maintenance concerns to the relevant Supervisor or Manager.
  • Assist with keeping machinery, equipment and work areas clean and in good working condition.

Attachment Changes

  • Assist Operators with changing attachments between pushers and buckets as required by operations.
  • Ensure attachment changes are performed correctly and safely.
  • Take care to prevent damage to machinery and attachments during changes.
  • Assist with the safe positioning, fitting and removal of attachments.

Repairs and Fabrication

  • Assist with minor welding, cutting, fabrication and repair work on machinery, attachments, equipment and infrastructure where required.
  • Carry out basic repairs to damaged machine components, guards, brackets and operational equipment.
  • Support maintenance activities involving grinding, drilling, cutting and fitting of steel or other materials.
  • Assist with minor repairs to machinery, attachments and equipment.
  • Ensure all welding, fabrication and repair work is performed safely and in accordance with company safety procedures.
  • Safely operate welding, grinding and cutting equipment where competent and authorised to do so.
  • Report any major welding, structural or mechanical defects requiring specialist attention.

Operational Support

  • Provide hands-on support to Operators throughout the shift.
  • Act as a runner/support person where required.
  • Assist with maintenance-related tasks so that Operators can remain focused on production.
  • Assist with general maintenance activities across the operational environment.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are used correctly and safely.
  • Report any defects, damage or maintenance concerns to the relevant Supervisor or Manager.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous experience as a Handyman, Mechanic, Maintenance Assistant or similar role.
  • Basic welding and fabrication experience.
  • Mechanical knowledge and practical maintenance experience.
  • Experience working with heavy machinery will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of basic preventative maintenance.
  • Ability to identify basic mechanical faults and potential machine problems.
  • Ability to safely use basic hand and maintenance tools.
  • Ability to safely operate welding, grinding and cutting equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures relating to hot works activities.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs to machinery, attachments and equipment.
  • Mechanically and technically minded.
  • Ability to perform practical repairs and fabrication work.
  • Good understanding of workplace health and safety requirements.
  • Physically fit and able to work in an operational environment.
  • Must be reliable, responsible and punctual.
  • Must have good attention to detail.
  • Must be willing to work shifts and overtime when operationally required.
  • Must have own vehicle.

ADVANTAGEOUS

  • Experience working with heavy machinery.
  • Mechanical qualification or relevant technical training.
  • Welding or fabrication qualification/certification.
  • Experience in a warehouse, logistics, port or industrial environment.
  • Experience assisting with heavy machinery attachments.
  • Experience with machinery repairs and general fabrication work.
