Job Title: Maintenance Assistant

Reports To: Maintenance Manager
Location: Lord Charles Hotel, Somerset West
Job Purpose
The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for assisting with the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the hotel's buildings, equipment, grounds, and facilities to ensure a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for guests and employees. The role supports preventative maintenance programmes and responds promptly to maintenance requests while maintaining high hospitality standards.

Key Responsibilities
General Maintenance
- Perform routine inspections of hotel facilities and report defects.
- Carry out general repairs including plumbing, carpentry, painting, tiling, plastering and basic electrical work.
- Assist with preventative maintenance schedules.
- Repair or replace damaged fixtures, fittings and equipment.
- Maintain guest rooms, public areas, conference facilities and back-of-house areas.
Electrical & Plumbing
- Replace light bulbs, switches and electrical fittings where authorised.
- Repair leaking taps, toilets and plumbing fixtures.
- Assist contractors with specialised maintenance work when required.
Grounds & Facilities
- Maintain pathways, parking areas and outdoor facilities.
- Ensure hotel facilities remain clean, safe and operational.
Guest & Operational Support
- Respond promptly to guest maintenance requests.
- Complete maintenance work with minimal disruption to guests.
- Communicate professionally with guests and colleagues.
Health & Safety
- Follow Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and hotel safety procedures.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly.
- Report hazards immediately.
- Ensure tools and equipment are stored safely.
- Participate in emergency procedures where required.
Equipment & Inventory
- Maintain maintenance tools and equipment in good working condition.
- Monitor stock levels of maintenance materials and advise when replenishment is required.
- Keep the workshop clean and organised.
Administration
- Complete maintenance job cards accurately.
- Record completed work and report outstanding issues.
- Assist in maintaining maintenance records and preventative maintenance schedules.

Minimum Requirements
Education
- Grade 12 (Matric) Advantageous
- Technical qualification or trade certificate would be advantageous.
Experience
- Minimum 1–2 years' maintenance experience, preferably within the hospitality industry.
- Experience in general building maintenance.
Knowledge & Skills
- Basic electrical maintenance.
- Plumbing repairs.
- Carpentry.
- Painting and finishing.
- General building maintenance.
- Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
- Preventative maintenance practices.
- General handyman skills.
- Ability to use maintenance tools safely.
- Must be willing to work rotational shifts, including weekends and public holidays.
- Must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the hotel or have reliable transport to ensure punctual attendance for all shifts.
