Join Bidfreight Port Operations as a Mechanic Assistant in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, where you'll apply your Grade 12 education and at least two years of experience in truck, staff bus, yellow equipment, and forklift maintenance. This entry-level, full-time position demands hands-on skills in Oxy-Acetylene, CO2, and Arc welding, airbrake and trailer brake assembly systems, forklift hydraulics, and tyre management standards. You will support routine maintenance, assist with equipment breakdowns and overhauls, perform oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid checks on heavy port machinery, and ensure compliance with manufacturers' and company schedules. Candidates must be proficient in English and isiXhosa or isiZulu, demonstrate problem-solving abilities, a motivated and punctual approach, and preferably hold a valid EB driver's license. A Matric (Grade 12) level of education
A minimum of 2-year experience in the broad spectrum of maintenance and repairs of trucks, staff buses, yellow equipment and forklifts
Ability to communicate in English and isiXhosa/ IsiZulu/ is essential
Must have good problem-solving skills and positive attitude
Motivated, self-starter, punctual, seeking continuous improvement
Experience with Oxy-Acetylene, CO2 and Arc welding
techniques
Experience with yellow equipment and forklift hydraulics
Experience with airbrake systems
Experience with trailer brake assembly systems
Experience with trailer electrics
Experience with tyre management standards and systems
Valid Driver’s License (EB) will be an advantage.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of buses, yellow equipment, and forklifts in compliance with manufacturers and company schedules
- Assist Mechanic in attending to all breakdowns of equipment
- Assist Mechanic with all overhaul/maintenance of equipment
- Perform oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and general grease-ups on heavy port machinery
- Maintain clean, safe working areas, manage tool inventories, and prepare parts or spares for scheduled maintenance
- Conduct the basic grinding, cutting, welding and metal preparation under the supervision
- Responsible for the maintenance of Grabs and Hoppers
