Mechanical Fitter / Fitter & Turner

Our client, an established steel manufacturing company based in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal, is looking for an experienced Mechanical Fitter or Fitter & Turner to join its new plant maintenance team. The role focuses on keeping heavy production machinery in good mechanical condition and minimising unplanned downtime.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out planned, preventative and breakdown maintenance on mechanical plant equipment.
• Strip, repair, overhaul and reassemble gearboxes, pumps, compressors, fans, conveyors and rolling mill components.
• Replace and maintain bearings, seals, couplings, shafts, chains and drive belts.
• Perform shaft alignment (laser or dial) and basic vibration checks.
• Manufacture and machine replacement parts on lathes and milling machines (Fitter & Turner).
• Maintain lubrication systems and follow lubrication schedules.
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, assembly drawings and technical manuals.
• Inspect equipment for wear and report defects before failures occur.
• Follow lock-out/tag-out, permit-to-work and PPE procedures at all times.
• Complete job cards and maintenance records accurately and on time.
• Take part in root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Be available for shift work, standby and emergency call-outs.

Requirements

• Trade Tested / Red Seal Fitter or Fitter & Turner.
• Minimum 3–5 years' post-trade experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
• Experience in steel, foundry, heavy engineering or a similar heavy industrial environment is strongly preferred.
• Strong mechanical fault-finding skills on heavy rotating equipment.
• Experience with laser alignment and precision measuring instruments.
• Basic hydraulic and pneumatic knowledge is advantageous.
• Good understanding of the OHS Act and safe working practices.
• Willingness to work shifts, overtime, standby and weekends.
• Valid driver's licence, clear criminal record and ability to pass a medical assessment.
