Job description

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration, working with governments, UN agencies, civil society and development partners to promote humane, safe and orderly migration. In South Africa, IOM supports migration governance, labour mobility, migrant inclusion, regional cooperation and the integration of migration into national and regional development frameworks.

The Migration Health Nurse will be based at IOM's Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Pretoria, South Africa . Working under the supervision of the Sub-Regional Migration Health Assessment Programme Coordinator, Senior Migration Health Nurse and Clinic Head, the role will support the delivery of migration health assessments and related nursing services for migrants and refugees. Two positions are available.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform nursing activities as part of migration health assessments, including vital signs, specimen collection, laboratory testing, vaccinations and TB management.
  • Support treatment, referrals, pre-departure procedures and medical movements.
  • Provide migrants and refugees with information on health assessments, treatments and referral processes.
  • Conduct comprehensive history-taking, biodata collection and identity verification throughout the health assessment process.
  • Implement Health Assessment Programme checklists, SOPs, universal precautions and infection prevention measures.
  • Support the management of pharmacy stocks, medical supplies and emergency kits.
  • Provide pre- and post-counselling on TB and HIV education, prevention and management.
  • Prepare administrative reports, programme updates and statistical information.
  • Support mobile health missions and pre-departure briefings and preparations.
  • Undertake medical escort duties when required to ensure continuity of care throughout the migration journey.
  • Maintain collaboration with health providers, panel physicians, embassies, UN agencies, NGOs and other partners.

Profile Required

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant clinical experience for candidates with a Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant clinical experience for candidates with a Diploma in Nursing.
  • Strong clinical nursing experience and technical skills, including phlebotomy.
  • Knowledge of patient safety, infection prevention and control, preventive care and disease control.
  • Experience or training in TB management, mass immunization, communicable diseases, laboratory testing or public health is an advantage.
  • Clinical specialization in emergency care is also considered an advantage.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited academic institution.
  • Candidates with a Diploma in Nursing that allows them to fulfil the full scope of responsibilities may also be considered.
  • A valid licence to practise as a nurse in South Africa is required .

  • Fluent English – required
