Job description
Position Overview
The Millwright is responsible for the joint mechanical and electrical preventive maintenance, diagnostic fault-finding, installation, and emergency repair of the foundry's critical fixed plant infrastructure. This role demands a highly versatile, dual-skilled artisan capable of minimizing factory downtime across continuous production lines, conveyor networks, automated machinery, and heavy industrial plant units in a harsh, high-heat smelting environment.
Shift Structure and Working Hours
· Rotational Shift Pattern: 4 Days On (06:00 – 18:00), 2 Days Off, 4 Nights On (18:00 – 06:00) with continual rotation
· Shift Duration: 12 hours per shift
· Availability: Must be willing to work weekends, night shifts, and public holidays according to the rotational cycle, alongside standby response for critical production stoppages
Core Responsibilities (but not limited to)
· Fixed Plant & Infrastructure Maintenance: Execute scheduled servicing, preventative care, and major overhauls on fixed heavy equipment, including conveyors, shaker units, ball mills, and furnace electrical/mechanical controls, single and double shaft shredders.
· Electrical & Instrumentation Fault-Finding: Diagnose, isolate, and repair faults within Low Voltage (LV) switchgear, motor control centres (MCCs), three-phase industrial motors, automated PLC inputs, and basic telemetry circuits.
· Mechanical Overhauls & Alignments: Rebuild gearboxes, swap heavy-duty bearings, repair high-pressure pumps/compressors, and align equipment drives using precision tools.
· Rapid Breakdown Response: Act immediately during emergency machine stoppages on the factory floor, troubleshooting combined electro-mechanical faults under high pressure to safely restore production
· OHS Act & Isolation Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to the . Ensure absolute execution of Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) and Permit to Work (PTW) protocols before breaching any live machine footprint
· Full Plant Inspection & Records: Perform comprehensive daily inspections of automated lines, diagnostic checks, fluid level balances, and structural integrity. Log all components used, tasks completed, and statutory checklists into the internal digital maintenance tracking program
Technical Skills (Hard Skills)
· Dual Electro-Mechanical Diagnostics: Advanced competency tracking down systemic faults utilizing diagnostic multimeters, electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and fluid-power circuit diagrams.
· Welding & Fabrication: Proficient gas/arc welding and gas cutting torch skills to modify brackets, repair chassis components, and execute structural machine modifications.
· Fluid Power Mechanics: Thorough understanding of pneumatic systems, compressed air distribution, and high-pressure hydraulic circuits.
· Precision Measuring Tooling: Expert utility of precision measuring tools, including micrometres, dial indicators, torque wrenches, alignment indicators, and calipers
Soft Skills
· Urgency & Decisiveness: Ability to troubleshoot rapidly and execute solid repair choices during volatile, high-cost plant delays.
· Resourcefulness: Creating code-compliant, safe mechanical or circuit adaptations when OEM replacement components are delayed during late-night production outages.
· Clear Technical Communication: Breaking down root causes of failures and providing accurate restoration timeframes to Shift Supervisors and the Production Engineering team.
· Resilience: Physically comfortable executing repairs within confined entry points, high-noise infrastructure zones, and extreme heat areas flanking live furnace lines.
Experience & Requirements (Mid to Seasoned Level)
· Trade Qualification: Valid South African Red Seal Section 13 Trade Test Certificate as a qualified Millwright (Electro-Mechanician).
· Experience: Minimum of 4 to 6 years of post-trade experience maintaining automated systems, assembly structures, or furnace infrastructure, preferably in a foundry, steel mill, mining, or metal recycling plant.
· Driver’s License: Valid Code 8 (B) or Code 10 (C1) driver's license with independent personal transport to manage emergency night-shift call-outs seamlessly.
· Medical Fitness: Must successfully pass a rigorous, comprehensive Foundry Medical Examination (including lung functions, chest X-rays tracking silica dust exposure, and full-spectrum audiometrics).
· Vision & Physical Ability: Excellent hand-arm precision coordination, capability to distinguish between color codes across complex wiring spectra, and fitness to maneuver safely inside tight equipment enclosures.
· Language Proficiency: Fluent written and spoken English, paired with the active ability to bridge communication gaps using local languages (e.g., isiZulu, Sesotho, or Afrikaans) on the plant floor
