Job description

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Millwright to join a water treatment plant in Secunda, Mpumalanga. Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance, breakdown response and fault-finding on electrical and mechanical plant equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Attend to breakdowns and prioritise maintenance work promptly.
  • Conduct routine servicing, repairs, inspections and plant condition monitoring.
  • Use and maintain the CMMS (MaintainX) and ensure accurate asset register control.
  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, pump and process-related faults.
  • Assist with equipment specifications, sourcing, quality control, repairs and installations.
  • Maintain required maintenance spares and stock levels.
  • Apply Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to identify and prevent recurring faults.
  • Ensure compliance with OHSA/MHSA, LOTO procedures, safety standards and ISO requirements.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and safe working practices.
  • Liaise professionally with clients and contractors where required.
  • Provide support at other regional sites when required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Qualified Millwright (Electro-Mechanician) with completed apprenticeship or equivalent training.
  • Section 13 or Section 26D Trade Test Certificate as a Millwright.
  • Minimum 5 years' relevant experience maintaining large electrical and mechanical installations.
  • Strong electrical background with excellent fault-finding and troubleshooting ability.
  • Experience with SCADA, PLC control systems and field instrumentation will be advantageous.
  • Experience in water treatment, mining or heavy industrial environments will be advantageous.

Technical Knowledge

  • Mechanical and electrical maintenance principles.
  • Centrifugal and positive-displacement pumps, including slurry and clean-water applications.
  • Pump alignment, fault diagnosis, vibration and bearing failure.
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • VSDs and soft starters, including setup and fault-finding.
  • Basic instrumentation, including pH, ORP and conductivity probes.
  • Calibration and fault-finding of analytical instruments.
  • Low-voltage electrical fault-finding.
  • Interpretation of electrical drawings, P&IDs and mechanical schematics.
  • Preventative and predictive maintenance strategies.
  • Lubrication systems and practices.
  • OHSA/MHSA and LOTO requirements.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong electrical and mechanical fault-finding skills.
  • Ability to diagnose complex pump and process-related failures.
  • Precision/laser alignment skills preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to troubleshoot effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and manuals.
  • Good planning, organisation, reporting and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong computer literacy, including MS Office and maintenance systems.
  • Strong safety awareness and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Professional and solution-focused approach.

Additional Requirements

  • Medically fit for the client/site requirements.
  • Own reliable vehicle or suitable means of transport.
  • Own accommodation within the region.
  • Willingness to travel and support other sites in the region.
  • Willingness to work standby, after hours and weekends when required.
  • Able to work in challenging water-treatment/industrial environments, including confined spaces, working at heights and varying weather conditions.
  • Physically able to perform lifting, climbing, standing, walking and other duties associated with industrial maintenance work.
