Multidisciplinary Engineering Estimator
Position Overview
The Multidisciplinary Engineering Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for engineering projects, ensuring compliance with ISO14001 (Environmental Management), ISO9001 (Quality Management), and ISO45001 (Occupational Health & Safety). This role requires a thorough understanding of project scopes, tender documentation, and client specifications to ensure competitive bids that meet company standards.
The Multidisciplinary Engineering Estimator plays a critical role in securing profitable projects while ensuring compliance with engineering specifications, client requirements, and applicable regulations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Cost Estimation
- Analyze project plans, drawings, and specifications to prepare accurate cost estimates.
- Assess material, labour, and equipment costs.
- Obtain quotations from suppliers and subcontractors to form a comprehensive cost estimate.
- Incorporate contingency plans for risks associated with engineering and environmental factors.
2. Project Tendering
- Prepare tender documents and submit cost estimates to clients.
- Review and clarify tender specifications with stakeholders to ensure accuracy.
- Attend pre-tender meetings and site visits to assess project-specific conditions.
3. Technical Evaluation
- Interpret industrial regrigeration system designs and engineering drawings
- Identify risks, discrepancies, and value engineering opportunities
- Propose cost-saving alternatives without compromising performance or compliance
- Liaise with design engineers to clarify scope and technical requirements
4. Compliance & Standards
- Ensure all estimates align with:
- South African National Standards (SANS)
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
- Environmental and energy efficiency requirements
- Incorporate compliance costs into estimates (safety, permits, QA/QC)
- Adherence to the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards
5. Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with:
- Clients and consultants
- Suppliers and subcontractors
- Internal engineering and project teams
- Attend site visits, tender briefings, and clarification meetings when required
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum Requirements
- National Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or related discipline (Essential)
- Trade Test (Mechanical Fitter, Boilermaker, Refrigeration Mechanic, Electrician) with estimating experience (Advantageous)
- Diploma in Project Management (Advantageous)
- Certificate in Cost Estimating or Quantity Surveying (Advantageous)
- Minimum 5 years' estimating experience within an engineering or manufacturing environment
- Minimum 3 years' experience estimating industrial refrigeration projects
- Experience with turnkey engineering projects
- Experience estimating mechanical piping systems
- Experience estimating structural steel fabrication
- Experience estimating pressure vessels and process equipment
- Experience with food processing, cold storage, abattoirs or beverage facilities
- Experience negotiating supplier pricing
Key Skills & Competencies:
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of industrial refrigeration systems and components
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and P&IDs
- Knowledge of South African construction and engineering practices
Analytical Skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong numerical and cost analysis capabilities
- Ability to assess risk and identify cost drivers
Communication Skills
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Ability to compile professional tender documents
- Effective coordination with multidisciplinary teams
Tools & Systems
- Microsoft Excel (advanced level)
- CAD viewers / BIM tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit – beneficial)
- ERP or procurement systems (advantageous)
Working Conditions
- Office-based with occasional site visits
- May require travel to industrial sites (including remote mining locations)
- Work under pressure to meet tender deadlines
