The Opportunit y: National Cleaning & Food Safety Compliance Manager
To provide national leadership, standardisation and assurance over cleaning operations, food safety compliance, and chemical and machine handling compliance across all Distribution Centres, in accordance with South African legislation and specifically the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and applicable food safety legislation. The role works in close partnership with Regional Operations Managers to design and embed consistent cleaning procedures, and independently audits compliance on an ongoing basis.
Key Responsibilities
National Standards & Operational Excellence
- Design, implement and continuously improve standardised cleaning procedures across all Distribution Centres.
- Ensure cleaning processes are aligned to site-specific operational and food safety risks.
- Develop and maintain a national cleaning standards framework.
- Drive continuous improvement through audit findings, operational reviews and best practice implementation.
Compliance & Auditing
- Develop and execute a structured national compliance audit programme.
- Conduct compliance audits covering cleaning standards, food safety, chemical handling and mechanised cleaning equipment.
- Track corrective actions through to completion and escalate significant risks where required.
- Investigate recurring non-conformances and perform root cause analysis to improve operational performance.
Legislative Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) 85 of 1993
- Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act 54 of 1972
- Relevant food safety regulations and municipal health requirements
- Monitor legislative changes and update procedures, standards and training accordingly.
- Act as the organisation's subject matter expert for cleaning compliance, food safety and chemical management.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Partner with Regional Operations Managers to drive consistent compliance across all sites.
- Prepare executive-level compliance reports and performance dashboards.
- Support client audits and engage with regulatory authorities when required.
- Manage supplier compliance relating to cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Training & Capability Development
- Deliver national training programmes focused on cleaning standards, food safety and safe chemical handling.
- Develop site-based compliance champions to sustain high standards between formal audits.
- Coach operational teams to embed a culture of continuous improvement and compliance.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
- Minimum 5–8 years' experience in a cleaning, hygiene, food safety or OHS compliance role, ideally within a warehousing, distribution, FMCG or retail supply chain environment
- Demonstrated experience conducting formal compliance audits and managing corrective action processes
- Experience operating across multiple sites/regions, with the ability to influence stakeholders without direct line authority
- Working knowledge of chemical handling (SDS/hazardous substances) and industrial cleaning equipment compliance requirements
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Food Safety/Hygiene Management, Environmental Health, or a related field (National Diploma or Degree)
- SAMTRAC or equivalent OHS qualification advantageous
- HACCP / food safety systems certification advantageous
Other
- National travel required to visit Distribution Centres across all 4 provinces on a regular, planned basis
- Exposure to warehouse environments, including areas where cleaning chemicals and mechanised equipment are in use
- Standard office-based work between site visits, for reporting, planning and stakeholder engagement
