Non - Qualified Mechanic

The Non-Qualified Mechanic / Repair Shop Assistant provides operational support to the workshop by assisting Qualified Mechanics and Senior Technicians with vehicle servicing, repairs, inspections, and general workshop duties. The role is responsible for ensuring that tools, equipment, parts, and work areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and organised condition while assisting with routine maintenance tasks under supervision.

The incumbent contributes to maintaining fleet reliability and minimising vehicle downtime by supporting efficient workshop operations and adhering to company policies, safety standards, and manufacturer procedures.

Key Performance Areas (KPAs)

1. Workshop Support

• Assist Qualified Mechanics and Senior Technicians with vehicle servicing and repairs.
• Prepare vehicles for maintenance and inspections.
• Remove and refit vehicle components under supervision.
• Assist with dismantling and reassembling vehicle parts.
• Support workshop staff during major repairs and maintenance activities.
• Perform general workshop duties as instructed.

2. Vehicle Maintenance Assistance

• Assist with routine vehicle servicing.
• Change engine oil, filters, and other service components under supervision.
• Replace basic wear-and-tear items such as wiper blades, bulbs, batteries, and tyres where authorised.
• Lubricate vehicle components as required.
• Assist with tyre changes and wheel removal.
• Clean vehicle components before reassembly.

3. Parts and Inventory Support

• Collect and deliver parts from the parts store.
• Assist with receiving and unpacking workshop deliveries.
• Organise and store parts correctly.
• Assist with stock counts and inventory checks.
• Report damaged or missing parts.
• Return unused parts to stores in accordance with procedures.

4. Workshop Housekeeping

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment.
• Clean tools, machinery, and workshop equipment after use.
• Sweep floors and remove waste materials.
• Dispose of used oils, filters, tyres, batteries, and other waste in accordance with environmental procedures.
• Ensure workstations remain clean and free of hazards.

5. Tools and Equipment

• Assist with maintaining workshop tools and equipment.
• Ensure tools are cleaned and returned after use.
• Report damaged or missing tools immediately.
• Operate basic workshop equipment under supervision.
• Assist with setting up equipment for repair work.

6. Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance

• Comply with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
• Wear prescribed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
• Follow safe working procedures.
• Report unsafe working conditions and incidents immediately.
• Assist in maintaining a safe workshop environment.
• Comply with environmental and waste disposal procedures.

7. Administration

• Assist with completing job cards where required.
• Record parts issued and returned.
• Report completed tasks to the supervising mechanic.
• Assist with maintaining workshop records.
• Ensure accurate documentation of work completed under supervision.

8. Continuous Learning and Development

• Learn workshop procedures and vehicle maintenance techniques.
• Participate in on-the-job training.
• Develop mechanical knowledge and practical skills.
• Attend training sessions as required.
• Work towards improving technical competency.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

• Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.
• A technical qualification or vocational training in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Repair, or Motor Mechanics will be advantageous.
• Valid driver's licence (Code B preferred).

Experience

• Previous experience in a workshop, garage, fleet environment, or mechanical assistant role will be advantageous.
• Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and workshop operations.

Experience working with hand tools and workshop equipment is desirable
