Job Description
We are seeking a driven, detail-oriented Occupational Health and Safety Moderator to join our Academic Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for moderating marked assessments and quality-assuring assessment practices for Occupational Health and Safety programmes, ensuring alignment with the requirements of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and relevant HWSETA standards.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree or Advanced Diploma (NQF Level 7) in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Management, Environmental Health, Risk Management, SHEQ Management, or a closely related field
- Strong knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, incident investigation, workplace safety compliance, and safety management systems
- Minimum 5 years industry experience in Occupational Health and Safety
- Registered HWSETA Assessor certificate (mandatory)
- Registered Moderator HWSETA certificate (mandatory)
- Previous moderation experience within an accredited training, education, or distance learning environment (mandatory)
- Sound understanding of QCTO/SETA moderation requirements and assessment quality assurance principles
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong administrative and organisational skills
- Ability to work independently and manage deadlines across marking cycles
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online communication platforms
- Passion for education and academic quality assurance
Advantageous
- Previous lecturing, tutoring, or training experience
- Experience working with distance learning or online education
- Experience moderating QCTO-aligned occupational qualifications specifically
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Moderate marked assignments and Portfolios of Evidence (POEs) to verify the accuracy, consistency, and fairness of marking against approved memoranda and assessment criteria
- Sample and review a representative selection of marked scripts/POEs per marking cycle, in line with internal and QCTO sampling requirements
- Provide detailed, constructive feedback and corrective guidance to markers and lecturers where discrepancies or inconsistencies are identified
- Verify that assessment tools and instruments align with QCTO unit standards and qualification requirements prior to use
- Compile and submit moderation reports for internal quality assurance and QCTO/SETA compliance purposes
- Flag and escalate marking inconsistencies, assessment design flaws, or accreditation compliance risks to the Academic Manager
- Maintain accurate moderation records in line with accreditation and audit requirements
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of assessment tools, marking guidelines, and moderation processes
