Workshop & Operations Manager
Location: Isando, Johannesburg
About Alpha Cab
Alpha Cab manufactures premium steel and stainless-steel canopies and accessories for bakkies across South Africa. We are looking for a hands-on Workshop & Operations Manager to oversee production, quality, staff, stock control, and workshop performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Production Management
Manage daily workshop operations.
Ensure production targets are achieved.
Schedule jobs and allocate labour effectively.
Monitor productivity and identify bottlenecks.
Improve manufacturing efficiency and throughput.
Implement and maintain SOPs.
Staff Management:
Lead workshop teams including welders, fitters, assemblers, painters and general workers.
Conduct performance management and disciplinary processes.
Recruit and train staff where required.
Foster a culture of accountability and quality.
Quality Control:
Implement quality control checks throughout production.
Ensure all products meet Alpha Cab standards before fitment or delivery.
Investigate and resolve quality complaints.
Reduce rework and warranty claims.
Inventory & Procurement
Manage steel, hardware and component stock levels.
Monitor material usage and wastage.
Coordinate with suppliers to ensure material availability.
Conduct regular stock counts.
Workshop Maintenance & Safety:
Ensure workshop equipment is maintained.
Manage preventative maintenance schedules.
Enforce health and safety standards.
Maintain a clean and organised workshop environment.
Reporting:
Report directly to management.
Track production KPIs.
Monitor labour efficiency.
Manage production costs and wastage.
Provide weekly operational reports.
Minimum Requirements:
Essential
5+ years experience managing a manufacturing, fabrication or engineering workshop.
Proven experience leading teams of 10+ employees.
Strong knowledge of steel fabrication, welding and assembly processes.
Experience with stock control and production planning.
Ability to read technical drawings.
Strong leadership and people-management skills.
Valid driver's licence.
Advantageous:
Experience in automotive accessories manufacturing.
Experience with canopies, trailers, truck bodies, 4x4 accessories or similar products.
Trade qualification (Boilermaker, Fitter, Welder, Millwright).
Lean Manufacturing experience.
ERP or production management software experience.
