Job description
SUMMARY
We are a UK-based cold-chain B2B logistics business with customers in the Food & Beverage and Pharmaceutical sectors. We are looking for an experienced, remote logistics operations professional to provide out-of-hours operational cover for our local team.
This is not a full-time role, but it is an important on-call position. You would be expected to answer calls during agreed cover periods, including UK evenings, occasional late nights and (to the extent possible) weekends.
This role pays a fixed monthly on-call retainer of R7,500 for agreed cover periods. The retainer includes being available to answer calls during those periods, plus an agreed amount of active work each month, such as call handling, bookings, driver coordination and follow-up. If the active work exceeds the included monthly allowance, additional time will be paid separately at the agreed hourly rate.
THE ROLE
The role involves two main types of calls:
1. Urgent customer delivery requests
Customers may call with time-critical delivery requirements. You will need to speak with them professionally, understand the job requirement, check vehicle and driver availability in our job book, identify the right vehicle for the job, coordinate with the driver, and make sure the booking is handled optimally.
2. Driver operational issues
Drivers may call with problems such as vehicle breakdowns, delays, hotel requirements, difficulty finding a delivery point, queries regarding the next day's work schedule, or other operational matters. You will need to be understanding, understand the issue quickly, arrange practical solutions, and keep the operation moving.
ABOUT YOU
The right person will have:
- Solid B2B logistics, courier, transport, or time-critical delivery operations experience
- Good understanding of vehicle types, driver coordination, job booking, and urgent transport requirements
- Excellent phone manner with business customers
- Ability to sound like part of our internal team, not an external call handler
- Strong availability during agreed on-call periods
- Calm, practical judgment when dealing with late-night operational issues
- Clear spoken English, easily understood by UK customers and drivers
- Excellent written style
- Ideally based in the Western Hemisphere, so UK evening/night cover is more practical
