Job description
Are you highly organised, detail-oriented, and passionate about inventory control and production support? We are looking for a Packaging Clerk to join our Production team in Johannesburg. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the availability and accurate control of packaging materials, labels, and returnable assets to support efficient production operations and customer satisfaction.
About the Role The Packaging Clerk is responsible for maintaining accurate packaging inventory records, coordinating packaging orders, managing returnable assets such as CHEP pallets and lugs, printing and controlling product labels, and supporting stock reconciliation processes. The successful candidate will help ensure product traceability, inventory accuracy, and compliance with food safety and quality standards.
Key Performance Outputs Inventory Control
- Monitor packaging stock levels and communicate replenishment requirements.
- Transfer packaging materials to packing lines and confirm work orders.
- Issue packaging materials and verify correct batch numbers.
- Prepare storage areas for incoming packaging stock.
- Print labels as required.
- Conduct daily stock counts and stock reconciliations.
- Assist with after-hours stock counts when necessary.
Crate Ordering & Asset Control
- Order and reconcile CHEP lugs and pallets via the relevant portal.
- Control Freshmark lug stock levels, movements, and returns.
- Manage Woolworths crate stock, usage, and return processes.
- Maintain accurate records and reconcile crate balances regularly.
Label Printing & Product Labelling
- Print retail labels and box-end labels accurately and on time.
- Assist with product and packaging labelling.
- Perform label quality and accuracy checks.
- Ensure labels meet customer specifications, traceability requirements, and quality standards.
- Support production and warehouse teams by ensuring labels are available when needed.
Packaging Order Coordination
- Assist with ordering packaging materials.
- Track and monitor packaging orders.
- Verify received packaging materials against purchase orders.
- Support inventory availability to prevent production delays.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Grade 12 / Senior Certificate.
- A certificate or qualification in Warehouse Management, Inventory Control, Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field will be advantageous.
- Knowledge of inventory management systems, data analytics, and digital technologies, including AI-enabled business tools, will be advantageous.
- Basic understanding of HACCP, BRCGS (BRC), GMP, Food Safety, or equivalent quality management systems.
- Minimum of 1–2 years' experience in a warehouse, stores, inventory control, packaging, or fresh produce packing environment.
- Good numerical ability with experience in stock counting, reconciliations, and inventory reporting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
