Paint and Hardware Store Manager

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Store Manager to open and lead our new Paint and Hardware store in Steelpoort, Burgersfort. You will set the store up from the ground up, build and lead the team, and be responsible for sales, customer service and the day-to-day running of the store.

Key Responsibilities – Managing the Team

• Help onboard and train the store team, including the induction for the new store.
• Draw up staff rosters and manage attendance, leave, overtime and productivity.
• Set clear performance targets, conduct regular performance reviews and give ongoing coaching and feedback.
• Handle disciplinary and grievance matters fairly, in line with labour legislation and company policy.
• Motivate the team, build a strong service and sales culture, and develop future team leaders.

Key Responsibilities – Managing the Store

• Set up the new store, including layout, shelving, stocking, systems and processes.
• Drive sales and profitability, achieve sales targets, and manage the store budget, expenses and margins.
• Ensure excellent customer service and resolve escalated customer queries and complaints.
• Plan and run local marketing activations and prospecting, including cold calling, to build the store’s customer base.
• Build relationships with trade and contractor customers, including account customers and bulk orders.
• Manage stock, including ordering, receiving, stock counts and stock-loss prevention.
• Oversee cash handling, daily cash-ups, banking, and the opening and closing of the store.
• Maintain visual merchandising, pricing and promotions, and a clean, safe, secure and well-presented store.
• Manage supplier relationships and ensure compliance with company policy, health and safety (including the safe handling of paints and chemicals) and legal requirements.
• Report on sales, stock, staff and store performance to management.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
• Minimum 7 years’ experience as a Store Manager in retail.
• Experience in Paint and Hardware or building materials retail.
• Proven track record of leading and developing a team and meeting sales targets.
• Sound knowledge of staff management, including rostering, performance management, disciplinary processes and labour legislation.
• Experience in stock, cash and budget management, point-of-sale systems and basic MS Office.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Must be willing to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays where required.

Advantageous

• Experience opening or setting up a new store.
• Knowledge of paint tinting machines and colour matching.
• Ability to speak Sepedi and other local languages in addition to English.
