This recruitment is being undertaken by MESO's Income Generation Unit, which delivers professional services to the mining industry, government institutions and the private sector. Revenue generated through this unit is reinvested into education, environmental conservation, skills development and community upliftment programmes.

Position Overview

MESO invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Pest Control Officer (PCO) to support the implementation of vegetation clearance, weed eradication and alien invasive plant control activities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe, effective and environmentally responsible application of herbicides while maintaining compliance with applicable legislation, safety requirements and best industry practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and supervise herbicide application programmes.
• Identify weeds and alien invasive plant species.
• Prepare, mix and apply herbicides in accordance with label instructions and legal requirements.
• Monitor the effectiveness of weed and invasive plant control measures.
• Conduct site inspections and recommend appropriate control methods.
• Maintain chemical usage records and application registers.
• Ensure the safe storage, transportation and handling of herbicides.
• Conduct toolbox talks relating to chemical safety and environmental protection.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental legislation.
• Assist with environmental rehabilitation and vegetation management activities.
• Report incidents, spills and environmental concerns.
• Provide technical guidance to supervisors and general workers.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 (Matric).
• Registered Pest Control Officer (PCO) Certificate in the appropriate field of registration.
• Minimum three (3) years' relevant experience in weed control, alien invasive plant management or vegetation management.
• Valid South African Driver's Licence.
• Computer literacy.
• Good communication and report writing skills.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

• Experience in environmental rehabilitation projects.
• Experience in herbicide application programmes.
• Knowledge of invasive alien plant legislation.
• Knowledge of environmental management systems.
• First Aid Certificate.
• Fire Fighting Certificate.
• Health and Safety training.
• Experience working on large infrastructure or mining-related projects.
