EXPERIENCE

Grade 1: None after registration as with the SAPC as a Pharmacist Assistant (Post- Basic). Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience after registration as a Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic) with the SAPC. Grade 3: A minimum of 13 years’ relevant experience after registration as a Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic) with the SAPC.

QUALIFICATION

Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacist’s Assistant (Post Basic) Institutional or Pharmacist’s Assistant (Post Basic).

INHERENT REQUIREMENT OF JOB

A valid driver’s license. Willingness to work overtime when necessary.

COMPETENCIES

Good communication skills (written and verbal). Ability to function independently, as well as in a multi-disciplinary team to ensure good patient care. Knowledge of relevant legislation and policies of the Department of Health Western Cape.

DUTIES

Responsible for the effective control and provision of pharmaceutical products. Responsible for the accurate compounding and manipulation of medicines or scheduled substances. Responsible for the effective control and distribution of pharmaceutical stock to areas within the facility for stock replacement. Responsible for data capturing, record keeping, statistics gathering, information provision and the daily running of the pharmacy department including dealing with queries on pharmacy matters. Responsible for preparation of prescriptions and assist with the dispensing of medication for individual patient use under indirect supervision of a pharmacist as per the Pharmacy Act.

REGISTRATION WITH A PROFESSIONAL COUNCIL

Registration with the SAPC as Pharmacist’s Assistant (Post-Basic) or Pharmacist’s Assistant (Post-Basic) (Institutional).
