Job description

Purpose of Role

To supervise and oversee the execution of tasks and activities in the process plant during shifts to enable the achievement of production targets within set parameters and ensure adherence to safety standards in line with the MHSA and Tharisa Risk Management protocols. To guide, coach and mentor team members to enable the achievement of and delivery of quality work objectives and improve individual and team performance.

Role Context

Operational Management

  • Oversee the implementation of process activities to enable the achievement of production targets by instructing and monitoring the safe execution of tasks in the plant.
  • Monitor shift operations in line with production requirements, report on progress within set intervals and suggest operational adjustments as needed to ensure production quotas and quality standards are met or exceeded.
  • Coordinate and monitor services in the plant regarding the operation of plant equipment within defined scope and ensure adherence to the production plans to achieve process stability and efficiency.
  • Monitor and control shift activities and report operation delays and process inefficiencies to minimise bottlenecks and plant lock up.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of all machinery and equipment within the mining plant to ensure continuous productivity and minimise downtime caused by breakdowns .
  • Liaise with the weighbridge and/or stock controller to track and ensure the timely dispatch of products and materials in line with set parameters.
  • Implement planned inspection schedules for critical equipment to proactively detect and identify potential equipment failure enable preventative action and report accordingly.
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports on production, safety and maintenance activities by recording equipment inspections, repairs and maintenance activities to ensure compliance.
  • Oversee the execution of tasks in line with set work objectives and schedules for shifts to ensure adequate resourcing and that employees are performing their duties effectively and in compliance with safety procedures.
  • Monitor the execution of critical daily maintenance tasks on the plant to ensure timely and efficient execution of tasks and minimise downtime.

Resource Management

  • Determine resource needs of the team and/or own area of work to achieve business outcomes.
  • Monitor the use of assets and resources within the team and own area of responsibility, to ensure assets and resources are consistently and appropriately utilised and managed.
  • Request and allocate required equipment and/or resources for the fulfilment of work objectives to guarantee quality outputs.
  • Coordinate and manage the activities of the plant staff including process operators and plant attendants and general laborers in area of accountability to ensure resource management and adequate staffing for delivery.

Stakeholder Relations

  • Engage with all relevant Departments on issues of the area of specialisation, as directed by the Manager.
  • Communicate with internal and/or external stakeholders, where required, to achieve work objectives and to maintain relationships.
  • Collaborate with process foreman to contribute to the development and implementation of process improvement initiatives to enhance plant performance during shifts.

Compliance, Risk and Safety

  • Champion the enforcement of an appropriate plant specific Risk Management Policy and appropriate Procedures and Standards (Codes of Practice) during shifts.
  • Implement a proactive approach to all safety protocols by creating awareness of hazards and behaviour in order to enforce compliance to minimise risk of accidents and injuries within the plant.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, provide relevant and necessary training to ensure all employees adhere to safety guidelines all the time and apply corrective action in case of non-compliance.
  • Coordinate efforts to execute drills and escape procedures in case of emergencies and operational requirements i.e. blasting to mitigate risks and fatalities.

Minimum Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 (NQF4) required.

Certifications: (Advantageous)

  • Mineral Processing Skills Programme (NQF 4-5)

Job specific experience:

  • 2 years’ experience as a Process Operator in a metallurgical Process Operation

Inherent requirements

Must be medically fit
