Professional Nurse

RESPONSIBILITIES AMONGST OTHERS:

• Ensure that appropriate health screening processes, for example, blood pressure, etc, have been conducted by Assistant Nurses
• Assess and screen patients, identifying the causes of health care challenges
• Prescribe relevant medication upon successful assessment of the symptoms
• Ensure that patients understand how to take medication and advise them of any potential side effects
• Identify and refer to the Medical Doctor, where the symptoms are of a complex and serious nature
• Close and file patients’ files appropriately upon completion of health assessment
• Advise patients on healthy lifestyle and disease prevention measures
• Ensure that all health care equipment is available for effective patient care and in good working condition
• Guide and coach the junior health care professionals in patient health care
• Ensure that all health care services are conducted in line with the Nursing Charter

COMPETENCIES:

• In-depth knowledge and understanding of relevant regulations and legislation governing healthcare practitioners

• Ability to demonstrate professional ethics, maintaining standards and conduct in accordance with the South African Nursing Act (SANC) and SANC regulations

• Proficient knowledge of computer-based data management programmes and information systems that manage medical records

• Excellent written and communication skills

• Excellent interpersonal skills

• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

• Excellent people management skills

• Excellent planning and organisation skills

• Excellent report writing skills

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in General Nursing/

• Registration with the SANC as a Registered Nurse.

• Post-basic qualification in Management is an advantage

• Midwifery qualification

• Experience in a casualty unit is an advantage

• 5+ years’ experience practicing as a nursing or in primary health care in a Public/Private Hospital environment
