SUMMARY: Experienced Dialysis Nurse | Specialised Renal Care | Johannesburg

POSITION INFO: We are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Professional Nurse - Specialty Dialysis to join a specialised renal care team based in Johannesburg. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality nursing care to patients undergoing dialysis treatment, ensuring safe and effective haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis procedures, monitoring patient responses, and contributing to positive clinical outcomes in accordance with professional, ethical, and organisational standards. Key Responsibilities: Patient Care & Clinical Practice Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients receiving haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatment. Prepare, operate, and monitor dialysis equipment in accordance with prescribed treatment protocols and manufacturer guidelines. Assess and monitor patient vital signs before, during, and after dialysis treatment. Perform cannulation of arteriovenous fistulas and management of central venous catheters while adhering to strict aseptic techniques. Administer prescribed medications, including heparin, erythropoietin, and intravenous therapies, ensuring accurate documentation. Monitor fluid balance, electrolyte levels, and patient responses to treatment, escalating concerns where necessary. Identify and respond appropriately to dialysis-related complications and emergencies. Multidisciplinary Collaboration Work closely with nephrologists, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic patient care. Participate in patient care planning, treatment reviews, and clinical discussions. Facilitate referrals and coordinate continuity of care where required. Patient & Family Education Educate patients and families on renal disease management, dialysis treatment options, fluid restrictions, dietary requirements, and lifestyle modifications. Promote treatment adherence and support patients in managing chronic renal conditions. Provide guidance regarding infection prevention and home care practices, particularly for peritoneal dialysis patients. Quality, Risk & Compliance Maintain accurate nursing documentation, dialysis treatment records, and incident reports. Adhere to infection prevention and control standards, nursing protocols, and SANC regulations. Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and risk management activities. Contribute to morbidity and mortality reviews and root cause analysis processes where required. Professional Development & Team Support Participate in continuous professional development and mandatory training programmes. Mentor junior nurses, students, and newly appointed staff within the dialysis unit. Support departmental objectives and contribute to a positive team environment. Maintain professional registration and ongoing compliance with SANC and CPD requirements. Minimum Qualifications & Experience: Degree or Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery. Post-Basic Qualification in Nephrology Nursing Science. Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse and Nephrology Nurse. Minimum 2-3 years'' experience within a specialised renal or dialysis unit. Experience in haemodialysis and\/or peritoneal dialysis nursing. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and electronic health record systems. Required Skills & Competencies: Sound knowledge of renal anatomy, renal disease processes, and renal replacement therapies. Proficiency in dialysis equipment operation and troubleshooting. Strong patient assessment, clinical reasoning, and decision-making skills. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and patient education abilities. Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team. Strong organisational, documentation, and time management skills. Compassionate, professional, and patient-centred approach to care. Advantageous: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Experience mentoring nursing staff and students. Experience participating in quality improvement and clinical governance initiatives. Exposure to both acute and chronic dialysis patient management.
