Requirements for Professor in Rock Engineering:
Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have: an earned doctorate in rock engineering; National Research Foundation (NRF) rating or potential to apply for NRF rating; teaching experience or potential to teach at university level; supervision to completion of at least three (3) doctoral students and more than 10 masters students by research or equivalent, good research track record with more than 1000 citations with evidence of H-index; at least 30 journal publications or equivalents as defined in the South African Department of Higher Education and Training guidelines; and evidence of local and international collaborations.
Definite advantages: Applicant must have operational rock engineering experience in the mining industry, rock engineering laboratory work experience, membership in a mining-related professional body, registration or eligibility to register with ECSA as a professional engineer (or equivalent), and evidence of service and academic citizenship (e.g. keynote/plenary speaker at high profile conference, award by international scientific society/organization, leader in international collaborative research, service to the university, and service to the profession).
Requirements for Associate Professor in Rock Engineering:
Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have: an earned doctorate in rock engineering; National Research Foundation (NRF) rating or potential to apply for NRF rating; teaching experience or potential to teach at university level; supervision to completion of at least two (2) doctoral students and more than 5 masters students by research or equivalent, good research track record with more than 500 citations with evidence of H-index; at least 15 journal publications or equivalents as defined in the South African Department of Higher Education and Training guidelines; and evidence of local and international collaborations.
Definite advantages: Applicant must have operational rock engineering experience in the mining industry, rock engineering laboratory work experience, membership in a mining-related professional body, registration or eligibility to register with ECSA as a professional engineer (or equivalent), and evidence of service and academic citizenship (e.g. keynote/plenary speaker at high profile conference, award by international scientific society/organization, participation in international collaborative research, service to the university, and service to the profession).
Duties: The successful applicant will be expected to lecture undergraduate and postgraduate students; supervise postgraduate research; undertake personal research, attract research grants, and earn research income; host a postdoctoral fellow; mentor early-career academics; promote innovation in the School; and participate in administrative activities at the School, Faculty, and University levels.
