Maternity Leave Substitute Teacher – 2–3 Year Old GroupAbout Geziggies Pre-Primary School

Geziggies Pre-Primary School is a bilingual Afrikaans and English school. Teaching, learning and daily communication take place in both Afrikaans and English, with Afrikaans being the first language of all our staff members.

The successful candidate should be comfortable communicating and teaching in both languages and should be able to communicate confidently with children, parents and colleagues in Afrikaans and English.

Working Hours

  • Monday to Friday: 06:30 – 13:45
  • Weekly staff meeting: 13:45 – 14:15
  • One day per week: Full day until 18:00
  • Twice per month: Full day until 18:00

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum ECD N5 qualification required.
  • Experience working with young children, preferably in a pre-primary or ECD environment.
  • Good communication skills in both Afrikaans and English.
  • A genuine passion for working with young children.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management and educational programme of a 2–3 year old class of approximately 25 children, supported by 2 classroom assistants.

Responsibilities include:

  • Taking full responsibility for the daily running and management of the class.
  • Leading and managing the class with confidence, warmth and consistency.
  • Creating a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where children feel secure and valued.
  • Planning and implementing age-appropriate lessons and activities according to the school's curriculum.
  • Preparing and implementing lesson plans.
  • Facilitating theme discussions and activities appropriate for the age group.
  • Completing relevant planning, observations, evaluations and assessments.
  • Providing opportunities for children to learn through play, exploration and hands-on experiences.
  • Supporting children's social, emotional, physical, cognitive and language development.
  • Encouraging independence, confidence and positive behaviour.
  • Supporting and actively participating in potty/toilet training, which will be a key focus for this age group.
  • Maintaining appropriate daily routines, structure and classroom expectations.
  • Communicating effectively with parents regarding children's progress, development and daily experiences.
  • Maintaining professional communication both inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Communicating and working collaboratively with the two classroom assistants and other staff members.
  • Ensuring the health, safety and wellbeing of all children in the class.
  • Participating in staff meetings, school activities, events and other responsibilities relevant to the position.

  • Patient and understanding of the needs of toddlers.
  • Energetic, creative and enthusiastic about working with young children.
  • Confident in leading and managing a classroom.
  • Organised and able to complete planning, evaluations and other administrative responsibilities.
  • Passionate about play-based learning and early childhood development.
  • A confident communicator in both Afrikaans and English.
  • Able to work well with classroom assistants and as part of a larger team.
  • Reliable, responsible and professional.
  • Comfortable with and knowledgeable about potty training and toddler development.

The successful candidate will play an important role in providing our young learners with a secure, nurturing and stimulating environment where they can learn, grow and develop through play.
