Quantity Surveyor

We are seeking a confident and competent Candidate Quantity Surveyor with strong experience in a professional quantity surveying consulting environment.

Appointment details

• This is a fixed-term contract appointment linked to a project with an estimated duration of one year.
• The position is fully remote when the successful candidate is not required on site.
• The project sites are located in KwaZulu-Natal.
• The successful candidate will be required to visit site for valuations and meetings for one full week every two weeks.
• Continued employment will be subject to the project requirements and duration.

Minimum requirements

• BSc degree in Quantity Surveying.
• BSc Honours degree in Quantity Surveying will be advantageous.
• Registered as a Candidate Quantity Surveyor with the SACQSP, or eligible for registration.
• Three to five years’ post-qualification experience.
• Experience must have been gained within a professional quantity surveying consultancy. Applicants whose experience is predominantly contractor-based will not be considered.
• Demonstrable experience managing assigned projects through Stages 1 to 5 of the project life cycle under the supervision of a Professional Quantity Surveyor.
• A valid driver’s licence and willingness and ability to travel regularly to project sites in KwaZulu-Natal.

Required project experience

The successful candidate must have independently managed the day-to-day quantity surveying responsibilities for their own projects, under the oversight of a Professional Quantity Surveyor, including:

• Stage 1: Inception and establishment of the client’s requirements, project scope and cost objectives.
• Stage 2: Preparation of preliminary cost estimates, cost plans and feasibility inputs.
• Stage 3: Design development cost management, measurement, value engineering and ongoing cost advice.
• Stage 4: Preparation of bills of quantities, tender documentation, tender evaluations and tender recommendations.
• Stage 5: Construction-stage cost management, valuations, payment recommendations, variation assessments, cost reports and final account administration.

Key responsibilities

• Manage assigned projects and deliver quantity surveying services from inception through construction.
• Prepare estimates, cost plans, bills of quantities and procurement documentation.
• Undertake measurement and produce accurate tender and contract documentation.
• Manage tender processes and prepare tender adjudication reports and recommendations.
• Attend and actively participate in client, consultant, contractor and site meetings.
• Conduct regular site visits and inspections and prepare the required reports and commercial records.
• Prepare valuations, assess variations and produce regular project cost reports.
• Monitor project expenditure against the approved budget and promptly identify cost risks.
• Manage project correspondence, commercial records and contractual documentation.
• Assist with the preparation, negotiation and settlement of final accounts.
• Coordinate effectively with clients, consultants, contractors and other project stakeholders.
• Deliver work within agreed deadlines and professional quality standards.

Required competencies

• Strong technical understanding of professional quantity surveying services.
• Ability to take ownership of assigned projects and work with limited day-to-day supervision.
• Ability to work effectively and remain accountable in a remote working environment.
• Confident, articulate and professional communication skills.
• Ability to present and defend commercial recommendations during meetings.
• Sound judgement and the ability to make appropriate project decisions within the limits of delegated authority.
• Strong numerical, measurement, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Good working knowledge of construction contracts, procurement processes and project cost control.
• High attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
• Strong planning, prioritisation and time-management skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and recognised quantity surveying or measurement software.

Preferred candidate profile

The ideal candidate is a self-assured and accountable professional who can manage their own workload, work effectively in a remote environment, communicate comfortably with senior stakeholders, contribute meaningfully during meetings and take ownership of projects while working under the professional oversight of a registered Professional Quantity Surveyor.

Pay: R15 000,00 - R20 000,00 per month
