Purpose of the Position

MGH North Support Services Ltd, a member of the JSE listed MultiChoice Group, wishes to appoint a dynamic, innovative individual to fill the role of Regional Tax Manager (Southern Africa Region) within the pay TV services business segment.

The role will primarily focus on the continental Africa tax affairs such as corporate income (incl TP) tax, VAT (plus other sales taxes), Withholding taxes Customs and Excise duties for the pay TV services Business Segment. Therefore, this is an exciting and challenging role, which requires constant learning and development, focus and execution power to achieve our strategic goals and objectives.

Key Performance Objectives Tasks Key Performance Areas

Reporting to the Head of Tax: Africa, the primary responsibilities for position include:

  • Tax research & dissemination – Timely monitoring and research on relevant taxation trends, legislative changes and relevant economic/fiscal changes in the Southern African countries, documenting relevant trends, legislation changes that impact the business units to facilitate disseminating to the various stakeholders in the various countris’ business units as well as Senior Management in the Group.

  • Tax risk review and management - Identifying current and potential tax risks in the region, advising the strategy against each risk and tracking the strategy and managing implementation thereof. In understanding the tax risks of the region, the regional tax manager fully needs to understand the provisions and accruals of his/her region. In addition, the regional tax manager periodically prepares tax reports for presentation to the senior management and regional leadership.

  • Supervision of tax accounting and reporting – Regular provision of guidance and supervision of the finance staff responsible for tax accounting, managing all internal tax reporting requirement for the region, coordinating the review of the tax reporting pack by the external tax advisor and statutory auditor as part of the interim and final year end audit. Review and sign off from tax perspective of the AFS of the principal and Agents modelled businesses within the Southern region. The regional tax manager needs to have a full understanding of the tax numbers in the entities in the region.

  • Tax optimization and strategy – Provide support in the identification, review and implementation of tax optimization opportunities. Further, provide support from time to time in the development of the short, medium and long-term tax strategy for the business segment from both an in-country, regional and Africa-wide persepctive;

  • Tax Advisory and training - Providing technical support, together with the Group Tax department, to MAH’s fully and partly owned businesses and investments in Southern Africa, acting as the internal advisor to the FMs, RFD’s and CFO’s of these businesses. Conduct formal and informal tax trainings to finance and other relevant staff members in the business segment.

  • Tax Compliance, documentation and administration – Providing support to the in-country finance teams responsible for tax compliance, reviewing certain key business transactions and ensuring the required documentation for tax purposes is maintained at all times and tracking the tax compliance status of the entities in the business segment, conducting operational tax reviews periodically to ensure the entities in the region are being correctly administered from a tax perspective. Ensuring all tax documentation, correspondence, including revenue queries, rulings & responses, all tax opinions (internal & external) are centrally archived in an access-controlled SharePoint/company drive; Assisting and management of all local and International audit queries from the revenue authorities in the Southern Africa region. Review and sign off the periodic and annual CIT Tax returns in the region.

  • Dispute resolution and Tax Lobby Efforts – Liaise with the Tax Manager heading the dispute resolution and lobby function to ensure the business needs are anticipated in the tax legislation passed in Southern Africa Region, including assisting in the development of lobby notes, memos and suggested legislations as well as socializing and meeting key decision makers at both the legislative and revenue authority level.

  • Tax Audit Management – Responsible for heading all tax audits in the region. Working with local finance team/ Tax manager to ensure that all responses are of a high standard and ensuring that the Audit response is submitted on time to the Revenue Authorities. Management of all tax cases through the judicial process.

Qualifications

  • Honours Degree in Commerce, Accounting, Tax, Law or equivalent;
  • Chartered Accountant or equivalent qualification in good standing; OR
  • Specialized tax qualification or studying towards it;
  • Minimum of 5 years of tax experience (at least 3 of these should be in a commercial environment) with significant experience in Northern African tax issues;
  • Fluent in English language Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills in English; and Proven ability to work cross-functionally;

Desired Experience and Characteristics

  • Experience in Southern Africa tax matters, legislation and compliance issues in major African countries, including withholding tax practices
  • Transfer pricing knowledge, the application of OECD principles and application of country specific guidelines (Southern Africa region, Dubai, Netherlands and South Africa)
  • Accounting knowledge and experience
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure
  • Highly developed sense of customer services and ability to communicate in a multi-country, multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment
  • Ability to anticipate, identify and resolve complex issues.
  • Experience in successfully managing projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability and flexibility to travel across the continent.
