Registered Nurse (RN) – Casualty (Accident & Emergency)

The Registered Nurse in the Casualty Department delivers emergency nursing care to patients presenting with acute illnesses and injuries while working efficiently within a high-pressure clinical environment.

1. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY

• The primary responsibility of the Maternity RN is to offer safe and supportive care throughout the antenatal, labour, delivery, and postnatal phases for mothers and their babies. This involves close monitoring during labour, assisting with deliveries, and providing essential newborn care.
• The role emphasises family education, emotional support, and maintaining a caring environment that promotes maternal and child health.

2. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (KPA)

• Triage and emergency assessment.
• Stabilisation and resuscitation support.
• Team collaboration in trauma cases.
• Documentation and handover.
• Adherence to emergency protocols.

3. KEY WORK OUTPUT AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Triage emergency patients.
• Deliver emergency nursing care.
• Monitor patient conditions.
• Administer emergency medication.
• Assist doctors during emergency procedures.
• Maintain accurate documentation.
• Ensure compliance with emergency protocols.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives.

4. REQUIREMENTS

• Current SANC registration as a Professional Nurse with valid APC.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in Accident & Emergency / Casualty / Trauma Unit.
• Proven triage and emergency care skills.
• Ability to function effectively in high-pressure situations and work shifts.

5. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION

• Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in General Nursing.
• Post-basic qualification in Trauma and Emergency Nursing (advantageous).
• BLS, ACLS, or ATLS training (advantageous).
• Computer literacy.
