Job description

1. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
- The primary responsibility of the Theatre RN is to provide comprehensive perioperative nursing care, ensuring patient safety from pre-operative preparation through surgery to post-operative recovery. This includes maintaining a sterile environment, assisting the surgical team effectively, and monitoring patients closely to prevent complications.
- The role demands strict adherence to theatre protocols and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to achieve optimal surgical outcomes.
2. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (KPA)
- Safe preparation and management of the operating theatre.
- Delivery of scrub, circulating, and recovery care.
- Patient safety and infection prevention.
- Multidisciplinary team collaboration.
- Compliance with documentation and quality standards.
3. KEY WORK OUTPUT AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Prepare theatre, instruments, and equipment.
- Monitor patients throughout the perioperative period.
- Maintain aseptic techniques and resource management.
- Participate in audits and quality improvement.
4. REQUIREMENTS
- Current SANC registration as a Registered Nurse.
- Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in an Operating Theatre environment.
- Ability to work shifts, weekends, and on-call.
- Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation, aseptic techniques, and theatre safety protocols.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work under pressure.
5. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in General Nursing (R425 or R224 programme).
- Post-basic Diploma in Operating Theatre Nursing Science (highly advantageous).
- Advanced Life Support or relevant trauma-related training will be an added advantage.
- Computer literacy (MS Office) and knowledge of hospital information systems.
