POSITION INFO: SAFETY OFFICER MINING ROLE OVERVIEW Position: Safety Officer (Mining) Location: KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, South Africa Environment: Greenfields Mining Operation (Processing plants, crushers, screens, conveyors, etc.) Remuneration: R25,000 to R35,000 per month (Commensurate with years' experience) Legal Appointment: Relevant Chapter 2 appointment in terms of the MHSA Regulations JOB DESCRIPTION Our client, a dynamic Greenfields mining operation on the KZN South Coast, is seeking a qualified Safety Officer with a strong background in mining and mineral processing environment safety. The role focuses heavily on safety administration , requiring excellent computer literacy and meticulous record-keeping to maintain zero-harm compliance. The successful incumbent will monitor safety and ensure statutory compliance across mineral processing plants, crusher plants, vibrating screens, conveyor systems, confined spaces, working-at-height activities etc.. You will carry legal responsibility under the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) , coordinating safety inspections, managing incident investigations, and providing expert risk advisory services to the business. TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES Hazards & Risks: Identify workplace hazards, conduct dynamic risk assessments, and enforce strict compliance protocols. Inspections & Audits: Coordinate routine safety inspections and facilitate both internal and external safety audits. Incident Investigations: Lead incident\/accident investigations, conduct formal inquiries, and compile comprehensive MHSA-compliant reports. Safety Administration: Maintain and update the accident control register, safety databases, and corrective action tracking systems. System Compliance: Implement, monitor, and ensure strict adherence to company safety systems, standards, and emergency preparedness programmes. Reporting: Prepare high-quality reports covering safety audits, legal compliance, safety analysis, and statistical trends. Training & Advisory: Deliver safety systems training and act as a proactive safety and risk advisor to operations. INHERENT\/MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Experience: Minimum of 3-4 years of operational experience within a mining or heavy mineral processing environment. Skills: Good computer skills (MS Office suite) with high administrative competency. Legal Knowledge: Good, working knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and its regulations. Qualifications: SAMTRAC, a National Diploma in Safety Management, or actively studying towards a relevant qualification (minimum 2nd year completed). Certifications: COMSOC 1 and COMSOC 2 are highly advantageous. Risk Training: Completed HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) and\/or Operational Risk Management training. Education: Grade 12 \/ Matric certificate. General: Valid First Aid Certificate, formal Accident Investigation training, and a valid Driver's Licence.
