Sylvania Metals is seeking a experienced Safety Officer to join the Mooinooi Plant team, responsible for enforcing the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHS Act) and ensuring compliance with ISO standards through rigorous maintenance and review of safety processes and procedures. This pivotal role requires expertise in occupational health and safety management, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance within the mining sector. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with operational teams to implement proactive safety measures, support incident investigations, and drive continuous improvement in workplace safety culture. • Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification.
• Completion of COMSOC Levels 1, 2, and 3 or SAMTRAC certification.
• Diploma or Degree in Risk Management is advantageous.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Solid understanding of the Mine Health & Safety Act and SHE systems.
• Minimum of 5 years' relevant experience in the safety field.
• Experience conducting incident and accident investigations, safety inspections, and comprehensive reporting.
• Background in delivering safety training programs.
• Strong administrative and organizational skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Promote compliance with the Mine Health and Safety (MHS) Act to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
• Develop and maintain strong stakeholder relationships with the host mine and relevant parties.
• Manage and maintain the Safety, Health, Environment, Risk, and Quality (SHERQ) system for the business unit.
• Conduct thorough incident and accident investigations, implementing corrective actions as required.
• Review and update processes and procedures in accordance with relevant ISO standards.
• Perform internal audits and compliance inspections, including monitoring subcontractors' adherence to safety requirements.
• Provide expert advice to the Plant Manager on SHE and security-related matters.
• Serve as a company proxy when necessary, representing organizational interests.
• Lead training initiatives, change management efforts, and oversee personnel management within the SHE function.
• Coordinate and support Safety, Health, and Environmental Representatives to promote a culture of safety.
