Job description
Sales Director | FMCG
Salary: Up to R3.5 million CTC
Area: Bryanston, Johannesburg
Type: Onsite | Permanent
Shape the commercial future of a leading FMCG business
Exceptional sales leaders look for more than another leadership role. They look for the opportunity to influence strategy, build strong customer partnerships and leave a lasting commercial legacy.
This is one of those opportunities.
Our client is a well-established South African FMCG manufacturer entering an exciting new phase of growth. Backed by significant investment and a clear long-term strategy, the business is focused on strengthening its position within the retail and institutional markets while delivering sustainable commercial growth.
As Sales Director, you will take ownership of the national sales function, leading both the Retail and Away From Home divisions. You'll play a key role in shaping commercial direction, strengthening customer relationships and delivering ambitious revenue growth within a highly competitive market.
This role is suited to a commercially astute leader who enjoys being close to customers, understands the realities of the South African retail landscape and has the credibility to influence at executive and buyer level.
What you'll be doing
You will lead the commercial sales strategy across the business, ensuring every initiative supports long-term growth while delivering results today.
Your focus will include:
- Developing and executing the national sales strategy.
- Leading and developing high-performing Retail and AFH sales teams.
- Growing strategic partnerships with South Africa's largest retail groups and wholesale customers.
- Identifying new commercial opportunities across multiple channels.
- Leading high-level commercial negotiations.
- Working closely with Marketing, Supply Chain and Finance to ensure a coordinated approach to growth.
- Using customer and market insight to improve pricing, category performance and commercial decision-making.
- Driving sales performance through strong forecasting, pipeline management and execution.
- Building a culture of accountability, collaboration and commercial excellence.
What we're looking for
You'll be an accomplished FMCG sales executive with a proven ability to lead large commercial teams and deliver meaningful growth.
We're particularly interested in leaders who have:
- At least 10 years' experience in senior FMCG sales leadership.
- A strong track record of managing national retail and wholesale accounts.
- Existing relationships with major South African retailers such as SPAR, Shoprite, Pick n Pay and Woolworths.
- Experience developing commercial strategy that delivers measurable business results.
- A natural ability to influence, negotiate and build trusted customer relationships.
- Experience leading teams within fast-moving, commercially focused organisations.
- A relevant qualification in Business, Commerce, Marketing or a related discipline. An MBA would be advantageous.
Experience within paper, tissue, hygiene or closely related FMCG categories will be highly regarded.
What will set you apart
You're as comfortable discussing long-term commercial strategy in the boardroom as you are sitting across the table from a key customer negotiating a national agreement.
You understand that sustainable growth comes from strong relationships, commercial discipline and a deep understanding of customers, competitors and market dynamics.
You enjoy leading from the front, making decisions with confidence and creating an environment where teams perform at their best.
Most importantly, you're looking for a role where your experience will influence the direction of the business, not simply maintain the status quo.
Why this opportunity?
This is a rare opportunity to join an established South African FMCG business at an important stage in its growth journey.
You'll have the support of an engaged executive team, the autonomy to shape the commercial agenda and the opportunity to make a measurable impact on one of the company's most important leadership portfolios.
If you're ready to lead with purpose, build lasting customer partnerships and help shape the next chapter of growth, we'd love to hear from you.
