We have an exciting opportunity for Operations Security Advisor. The purpose of this role is to Safeguard the company's assets, personnel, and operations by leading comprehensive security initiatives, conducting thorough risk assessments, and implementing robust security strategies.

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel, widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.
Job Description
- Adhere to all safety, health, and environmental practices and requirements.
- SHE policies and procedures:
- Escalate all unsafe practices or risks to the direct supervisor/manager.
- Support good housekeeping in the department and on-site to ensure compliance.
- Active participation in VFLs, Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.
- Performance Delivery
- Conduct comprehensive threat and risk assessments for mining operations, considering geopolitical risks, local security conditions, and potential criminal activities.
- Develop and implement security plans and strategies tailored to the mining site's specific needs and challenges. This includes considering the unique security risks associated with the location, type of department at the mining operation, and local context.
- Establish and enforce security protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of personnel, facilities, and equipment. This may involve access control measures, surveillance systems, and incident response protocols.
- Collaborate with local law enforcement agencies and other relevant authorities to enhance security measures and coordinate responses to potential security threats or incidents.
- Develop and implement crisis management and emergency response plans, ensuring the operations are well-prepared to oversee various security-related crises, such as natural disasters, civil unrest, or security breaches.
- Provide personnel with training on security procedures, emergency response protocols, and general security awareness. This includes conducting drills and exercises to ensure employees are well-prepared for different security scenarios.
- Identify, recommend, and oversee the implementation of security technologies, such as surveillance cameras, access control systems, and monitoring tools, to enhance the overall security posture of the mining operation.
- Implement measures to protect intellectual property and proprietary information related to mining processes, exploration data, and other sensitive information.

- The Work: Key Outputs and Accountabilities
- Provide guidance on travel security for employees, especially in regions with higher security risks. This may involve advising on safe transportation methods, accommodations, and communication protocols.
- Foster positive relationships with local communities to build trust and cooperation. Effective community engagement can contribute to early detection and prevention of potential security threats.
- Conduct regular security audits to assess the effectiveness of existing security measures and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Stay informed about security intelligence relevant to the mining industry, including regional security trends, geopolitical developments, and potential threats that may impact operations.
- Ensure that security measures are extended to contractors and vendors, including verifying their security protocols and compliance with the company's security standards.
- Stay abreast of local and international laws and regulations related to security in the mining industry. Ensure that the mine’s security practices align with legal requirements.
- Provide regular reports to senior management on the status of security measures, incidents, and critical security performance indicators.
- Compliance
- Adhere to Anglo American requirements and external (legislative, regulatory, permitting) requirements related to the discipline.
This role is in the Safety, Health, Environment, Protection Services & Security (SHEPS) department on a band 6.10 (D1) reporting to the Section Manager Security.
Qualifications
- Matric
- National Diploma in Security Risk Management or equivalent (NQF6)
- Bachelor’s Degree / BTech Security Risk Management or equivalent (NQF7)
- Registered with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) Grade A
- Firearm Certificate (including SAPS competency certification)
- A clean criminal record is a non-negotiable requirement. The successful candidate must successfully complete a pre-employment polygraph examination.
- Executive Protection Course
- Voluntary Principles on Human Rights and Security
- Handling of less lethal weapons
- SA Drivers Licence
Technical Knowledge
- 5 - 7 years of Security Management, preferably in the mining industry, of at least two years in an advisory role.
- Experience in security management, criminal investigations, and intelligence networks.
- Experience in conducting security and public liability audits.
- Expert knowledge in security technological systems and processes.
- Riot Control and Strike Management.
- Working knowledge of the Criminal Procedures Act, PSIRA Act and Mine Health and Safety Act.
- Knowledge of industry best practices about tactical response.
- Basic knowledge of applicable business communication.
- Experience in Security Project Management.
- Demonstrated experience managing specialised security functions such as alarm response, crowd/incident/riot management/aviation security.
