Job description
About Us
Long Street Backpackers is one of Cape Town's most iconic and well-loved hostels, situated in the vibrant heart of the city. Alongside the hostel, our building is home to Sweeties Beerhall and the Longstreet Market — a buzzing mix of hospitality, retail, and nightlife. We take the safety of our guests, staff, and property seriously, and we're looking for a calm, alert, and professional Security Officer to hold down the fort through the night.
THE ROLE
As our overnight Security Officer, you'll be the sole guardian of the Long Street Backpackers and Sweeties Beerhall premises from midnight to 08:00. This is a role that demands reliability, presence, and good judgement — you'll manage late guest arrivals and early departures, coordinate bar closing procedures, monitor the full perimeter, and ensure the property is clean, secure, and handed over in order to the day team every morning.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monitor and secure all areas of the hostel and Sweeties Beerhall throughout the overnight shift
- Conduct end-of-night checks — lock all doors, switch off lights, and confirm the African Market is secure
- Assist late-arriving guests and guide them to their rooms; manage early check-outs professionally
- Ensure non-guests do not access the hostel, courtyard, TV room, or workspace
- Coordinate bar closing — confirm bar is locked on time and does not reopen after closure
- Enforce noise curfews — courtyard music off by 22:00, common areas quiet after midnight
- Check kitchen and courtyard are clean and all appliances are switched off
- Log and store all lost-and-found items correctly; report maintenance issues to management in writing
- Support and guide the on-duty bouncer during their shift
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work overnight shifts (including weekends and public holidays)
- Calm and composed under pressure — able to handle difficult situations without escalating them
- Physically present and alert throughout the shift — this is an active, not a passive, role
- Professional and respectful in all interactions with guests and staff
- Previous security, hospitality night shift, or facilities experience is advantageous
- PSIRA registration is advantageous but not a requirement for this role
- Must arrive 10–15 minutes before shift commencement
