Semi Skilled Fitter

Job Description The SA Steelworks Machine Shop Department requires a committed, hardworking and motivated individual to join their team. The successful applicant will be responsible for, but not limited to Semi-Skilled functions within the Roll Assembly Department.

Responsibilities Will Include, But Are Not Limited To

• Roll Assembly, including:
• Assemble and disassemble rolling mill components, including chocks, bearings, seals, and locking rings.
• Clean and degrease mechanical parts thoroughly to prepare them for inspection and reassembly.
• Mount and fit heavy-duty bearings onto roll necks using basic induction heaters, hydraulic presses, or manual impact tools.
• Perform basic precision measurements using Vernier calipers, micrometers, and feeler gauges to verify clearances and tolerances before final assembly.
• Providing support and assistance to Production ,including :
• Conduct visual inspections of rolls and bearings to identify signs of premature wear, cracks, scoring, or thermal damage.
• Report identified defects immediately to the Team Leader, Production, Engineering Manager or a Qualified Artisan to prevent operational downtime.
• Ensure all rolls are assembled to a required standard
• Inventory and spares handling
• Housekeeping of the workshop
• Abide by the regulations as set out in the Occupational Health and Safety Act
• Other ad-hoc duties as assign by the Department Supervisor, Team Leader or Engineering Manager

Qualifying Experience

• Grade 12 or equivalent
• Minimum of 3 years relevant working experience within the engineering or metal industry
• Knowledge and use of power tools
• Strength to handle materials and tools (physically fit)
• Able to perform basic technical tasks
• Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of workshop safety
• Good hand-eye coordination
• Hands on practical approach to the job
• Safety awareness and consciousness
• Ability to work under challenging conditions
• Sound communication skills (understand, read and write English)
• Computer literate
• Must be prepared to work weekends and overtime when required

Standard hours 07h30–17h00: Monday – Thursday

07h30–16h00: Friday
