Job description
Job Purpose:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing the accounting and financial reporting functions of a group of companies across various industries, including but not limited to events, agriculture, transport and property. The role ensures accurate financial records, compliance with statutory requirements, timely reporting, and effective financial controls to support business operations and decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Assist with the preparation of accurate year-end and interim financial results, ensuring compliance with accounting standards.
- Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements set by SARS and other relevant bodies.
- Stay up to date with changes in financial regulations and implement required adjustments.
- Provide full support during external audits and or reviews, including the preparation of required documentation and audit file content.
Tax & Regulatory Submissions
- Assist in preparing and submitting monthly VAT returns in accordance with statutory deadlines.
- Perform monthly reconciliations of Income Tax and VAT Control Accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Submitting and filling of annual CIPC returns and ultimate beneficiary ownership declarations.
Operational & Industry-Specific Finance Tasks
- Monitor day-to-day financial operations, including supplier payments, customer invoicing, and payroll oversight.
- Support fuel, toll, tyre, and maintenance cost tracking, and assist with route profitability analysis.
- Liaise with depot and operations teams to provide real-time financial insight and assistance.
- Ensure that fleet-related expenses are correctly allocated and reported.
- Conduct daily operational tasks within the finance department to maintain smooth workflows.
- Handle ad hoc accounting and finance matters as requested by the Financial Manager.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (BCom or equivalent)
- Completed articles (SAIPA/SAICA/CIMA)
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or a similar finance role
- Proven track record in preparing financial statements and managing regulatory compliance
Skills and Competencies:
- Solid understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting standards
- Proficient in accounting software (e.g., Sage Evolution, Pastel, Xero, Simplepay) and Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
- High attention to detail and strong analytical skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team, with a proactive approach
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to liaise across departments
- Capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a high-pressure environment
- Familiarity with South African tax regulations, including VAT and PAYE compliance
Pay: R30 000,00 - R40 000,00 per month
