Senior Bookkeeper / Ecommerce Accountant — Full-Time Remote

Question Beauty is a fast-growing, NZ-owned colour cosmetics brand known for bold, playful, high-impact makeup. We sell globally through our Shopify store, work with international suppliers and creators, and are scaling quickly across DTC, retail, and new markets.

As the business grows, we’re looking for a highly organised, detail-oriented Accountant & Bookkeeper to take ownership of our day-to-day finance operations, bookkeeping, reconciliations, reporting, and financial admin.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who loves clean numbers, clear systems, and keeping a fast-moving business financially organised.

Role Overview

The Accountant & Bookkeeper will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing reconciliations, supporting month-end close, tracking supplier payments, helping with cash flow visibility, and ensuring our accounts are up to date across multiple currencies and business entities.

You’ll work closely with the founder and external accountants/advisors to keep the finance function running smoothly and ensure leadership has clear, timely financial information.

Key Responsibilities

Bookkeeping & Reconciliations

• Maintain accurate bookkeeping across company accounts.
• Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, PayPal, Shopify, payment processors, and other platforms.
• Track sales, refunds, fees, chargebacks, merchant payouts, and platform deductions.
• Ensure all transactions are correctly coded and categorised.
• Maintain tidy, audit-ready financial records.

Accounts Payable & Supplier Payments

• Process supplier invoices and contractor invoices.
• Track upcoming payments, deposits, balances, and due dates.
• Reconcile supplier statements and purchase orders where needed.
• Support international payments and multi-currency transactions.
• Maintain organised records of invoices, receipts, customs charges, freight, duties, and taxes.

Ecommerce & Inventory Accounting

• Reconcile Shopify sales, payment gateways, refunds, discounts, fees, and taxes.
• Support inventory and COGS tracking across products, suppliers, and stock movements.
• Help maintain visibility over landed cost, freight, duties, and inventory value.
• Work with internal systems and external accountants to improve stock and margin reporting.

Month-End Reporting

• Assist with monthly close procedures.
• Prepare management reports including revenue, expenses, cash position, margin, inventory value, and key variances.
• Flag unusual transactions, missing invoices, overdue payments, or reconciliation issues.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning.

Tax & Compliance Support

• Prepare records for GST/VAT/sales tax filings as required.
• Support external accountants with tax, compliance, annual accounts, and entity reporting.
• Maintain organised documentation for NZ and international business operations.
• Help ensure all finance processes are compliant, consistent, and well documented.

Systems & Process Improvement

• Help improve financial systems, workflows, coding rules, and reporting processes.
• Maintain strong digital filing and documentation standards.
• Identify opportunities to reduce manual work and improve accuracy.
• Support the implementation of tools or integrations where useful.

What We’re Looking For

• Proven experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or finance operations.
• Strong understanding of reconciliations, accounts payable, month-end reporting, and transaction coding.
• Experience with ecommerce, Shopify, inventory, or product-based businesses is highly preferred.
• Confident working with multi-currency transactions and international suppliers.
• Experience with Xero or similar accounting software.
• Comfortable with spreadsheets and financial reporting.
• Highly detail-oriented, reliable, and organised.
• Able to work independently and proactively flag issues.
• Strong written communication skills.
• Comfortable working in a fast-growing, founder-led business where systems are evolving.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Shopify, PayPal, Stripe, Airwallex, Wise, A2X, Dext, Hubdoc, Cin7, Inventory Planner, or similar tools.
• Experience with cosmetics, beauty, retail, ecommerce, or consumer goods.
• Knowledge of inventory accounting, landed costs, customs duties, and COGS.
• Experience supporting businesses with multiple entities or international operations.

Position: Full-time

Location: Remote or hybrid, with timezone overlap required

Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday

Start date: As soon as possible

Compensation: Competitive, based on experience
